PONG 4D

PONG 4D is like normal pong but for 4 players simulutaneously. It’s impossible to play if you try to be all 4 players yourself so get some friends to crowd round your desk.

Statesman or Skatesman?

This is website of pure unadulterated genius – B3ta member monkeymanblue wrote to lots of MPs from the British Parliament to ask if they had any photos of them riding on a skateboard, space hopper, pogo stick or anything similar to find out if they were a Statesman or Skatesman?.

Amazingly he got replies back from loads of them including responses from three Prime Ministers, five Chancellors, six Foreign Secretaries, four Home Secretaries, and three Speakers of the House of Commons.

I’d never have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.

Middle Lane Morons

Highway Code 238 : You should drive in the left-hand lane if the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower moving vehicles it may be safer to remain in the centre or outer lanes until the manoeuvre is completed rather than continually changing lanes. Return to the left-hand lane once you have overtaken all the vehicles or if you are delaying traffic behind you.

Middle Lane Morons wants you to name and shamethose who don’t understand this rule. (As usual my American guests won’t understand this since they can drive in any lane I seem to remember)

Regulars Reunited

The latest in the …reunited trend is Regulars Reunited – a chance to say ‘You’re my besht mate’ whilst puking over a total stranger. Just to prove that we’re all alcoholics round my neck of t’woods – here’s a list of a few of the pubs near me. (Notice the lack of imagination – there are 9 pubs called the ‘New Inn’ here!)

modDB – the game mod resource

Once you’ve been playing game online as long as me you start to get overwhelmed by the sheer range and number of add-on mods (modifications) for each game. modDB.com is an attempt to list every mod regardless of the game. Now, that’s quite some ambition but it does seem to be fairly comprehensive so far although some elementary redesigning is needed to make the site a lot easier to read – grey text on black background isn’t easy to see.

So You Want To learn Japanese…

Superb essay on learning Japanese – the main gist of which is…DON’T!

The reason for this is simple – it’s too hard. Here’s an idea of what you’re in for if you do decide to ignore this gaijin’s advice;

English Sentence:

Jane went to the school.

Same Sentence In Japanese:

School Jane To Went Monkey Apple carburetor.

I mentioned the original Amazon Light a long time ago but I’ve recently noticed that Alan Taylor has not only done a new version of Amazon Light but he also has an Amazon UK version of his wonderous tool. If you use Amazon as a reference tool as often as I do then this is a godsend.

Never mind Redbull – SKyray gives you real wings

Skyray is the invention of Alban Geissler – a guy who looks certain to be raking in the money soon once his invention becomes mass-produced. The Skyray is somewhere between a hang-glider, a parachute and a set of wings. At only 9lbs and impossible to spin out of control, it looks a complete winner. Now, how do I convince my wife to let me buy one?

Lemmings online!

Woo Yay! One of my favourite ever games was Lemmings and I followed it from around 1991 onwards through it’s various incarnations onplatforms from the Spectrum through the BBC Micro, Commodore 64 to it’s final resting place on the PC. Now it’s been reincarnated as online playable DHTML Lemmings – and it rocks more than ‘Breaking the Law’ by Judas Priest. (Which is the most rockinist of rock songs ever.)

Cat-Fi – the Ultimate WiFi dongle

Here’s a product we’ve just developed at work here, it’s the latest in Wi-fi technology. The dongle converts a CAT 5e RJ45 connector to a Wi-Fi antenna powered from the onboard NIC in your PC. Here are a couple of pictures of the kit.

For those of you without enough money for one, we have a

budget version based on the eXtensible Accelerated Overnet Hardware chipset, or XAOH.

The above was a prank pulled at work today to humiliate some of our geeks here – in total, 9 ppl responded to the mail sent round that said,

‘Hi,

We are trialling a segregated Wi-Fi network in the building. As well as determining low signal spots within the building, we are also trialling a new key fob device for enabling desktops and laptops that are not Wi-Fi enabled. (See attached). Netgear have sent us 10 of these devices for trial. These devices are unique on the market as they convert a CAT 5e RJ45 connector to a Wi-Fi antenna powered from the onboard NIC in your PC. Please respond if you are interested in trialling this product.’

The gizmos are just a telephone mod-tap, a keyring, the end of a network cable, some superglue and some snazzy photgraphy

Google Goodness

Version 2 of the Google Toolbar has been released. I’ve been beta testing it for a few months now and it’s become an essential feature in my browser now. New features include a simple pop-up blocker (which works well but can be a bit annoying when it blocks things that you do want). Google have also released several other new features of note including a calculator, an advanced news search and the ability to search including synonyms of a keyword by putting a ‘~’ in front of a word.

All in all – a nice bunch of new features.

Kylie – the new virus?

Anyone who saw Kylie Minogue’s advert for Agent Provocateur will be well aware of why she’s so popular that ‘Internet experts’ are saying that the advert for her new lingerie range could ‘bring companies’ computer networks grinding to a halt’. I’ve only seen a low-bandwidth version so far and while it isn’t a patch on the AP one, it’s always good to watch Kylie writhing around in underwear.

Sod Arnie – Vote Georgy Russell For California Governor

Obviously I can’t vote in the Californian elections (something to do with a tea party and the British deciding that the size of America scared us and we wantd our mummies) but, anyway, if I could, I’d make sure that this geek’s vote went to Georgy Russell. She was at least born in America unlike the Austrian Arnie but, to quote Slashdot, she ‘studied computer science, often wears ThinkGeek clothing, has a blog, reads Slashdot, and knows how to run Linux.’ That means she speaks to me more than any other political candidate I’ve ever heard of.
