Even More Xmas Stuff

I seem to be developing a habit over the past few days for Xmas associated blogs. At least it’s the season for it. I saw this and just thought it was absolutely delightful so I’m going to inflict upon you.

Murderous Little Pixies

Elves, eh? Tolkien would have you believe that they were lovely, noble and elegant creatures. I, on the other hand, have always thought there was something dark and twisted about the ugly little xmas associated critters, hence I derive great pleasure in being able to mercilessly slaughter every little imp that comes my way.

“Space,” says The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy, “is big. Really big…”.

“… You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mindboggingly big it is. I mean you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist, but that’s just peanuts to space. Listen …“… (seemless segway into Monty Python ‘Meaning of Life’ quote…) “So remember when your feeling very small and insecure, How amazingly unlikely is your birth. And pray that theres intellegent life somewhere up in space, Cause theres bugger all down here on earth.”

Ever wondered where your missing socks go?

I bought fifteen pairs of socks two months ago (you think I’m kidding, don’t you?). Now I’m down to about 5 and a half pairs. I had to find out more. I stumbled upon this site which offers many views on missing absent sock phenomena, interesting stories and even self-help groups.

Eek – hold the press!

So, all of a sudden, having just started my blogging apprenticeship with the infamous JennyCide, (and still somewhat wet behind the ears) I find myself holding the fort as JennyC is otherwise engaged for a short while. I don’t believe I’ve ever noticed a time when pri.me.uk has not had something significant to say at least once each working day (and indeed weekends) and I’m not prepared to let it start happening now! I cannot confess to being as knowledgable in the ways of the interweb as J.C. so don’t expect too much out of me – however I do give my solemn oath that I shall waste as much of my work day as possible trawling the net for little gems I can bring to you to make your day that little bit lighter. I hope I do not fail to please.

Bluffers Guide to Design

If, like me, you enjoy your web design but have all the colour coordinating know-how of Timmy Mallet in a Christmas jumper then check out this site. Everything you need to know about colour matching – it’ll even throw random selections of complimentary colours at you. A word of warning – some of the generated combinations are pretty awful and if you can’t tell which ones then I suggest you leave it to the pros (if you are a pro and stillcan’t tell then then I suggest you quit).

Christmas is coming!

Nothing marks the festive season quite as well as (1) kitsch Xmas themed toys and (2) the ubiquitous family argument. This lovely little toy is a good example of the former and helps prevent the latter by giving you an outlet to vent your spleen.

Hello GromBlog fans!

Just a little introductory blog by newbie blogger Solomon – I expect you may be seeing a little from me from time to time. Nothing to report at this time but I’ll be sure to tell you when there is!

Cum All Ye Faithful!

Taking the hymn far too literally is this new advert hosted on comeallyefaithful.co.uk (Seems NSFW but actually nothing too naughty so you’re probably ok).

Ultimate Boot CD

The extremely handy Ultimate Boot CD has been updated. If you have a sick computer or are always being asked to fix other people’s pcs then keep a copy of this disk handy – you won’t think you need it until you actually do.

Best used in conjunction with the ever-amazing Knoppix which is a full version of Linux including all the tools you need in an emergency as well as word processors, spreadsheets etc all in a bootable disk. Burn both of these onto a cd, keep them safe and then send me a thank-you mail when you finally need to print out a document and your hard drive has completely died.

Silent Ringtone

I love the idea of this silent ringtone more than using it in practise. The idea is simple – we all have people that we don’t want to talk to – simply allocate the silent ringtone to them and when they ring – you don’t hear the phone and they get sent straight to voicemail.

Antarctic Photo Library

Just been tipped off to the Antarctic Photo Library by the always helpful Tara from Researchbuzz. It’s a superb resource for good photos of penguins and igloos if you ever need that sort of thing. If you like the more serious links of resources on the web (like this photo library) then chances are I got it from Tara – sign up for her newsletter (or even better – go buy a book).

Deadly Laptop Accessories

I can’t see how this Laptop Accessory would be any use or even remotely safe to use unless you were in a traffic jam for a very long time. Even then I’d end up hitting my car’s horn by accident all the time. Seriously though, anyone care to explain to me why they are allowed to sell this when it’s so obviously dangerous?

Tina’s phone stolen whilst audio-blogging

Girl gets drunk, records a livejournal audio-blog entry on her mobile,

forgets to hang up, then gets mugged, has her phone stolen and driven

off by a mugger – all with the audioblog recording still running.

How Humiliating!

This must have been so humiliating for Eddie Irvine – the ex-Formula 1 racing driver – Getting caught for speeding on a scooter. How the mighty have fallen!

(NB for our American readers – Formula 1 is like a proper, grown-up version of Cart racing or the Indy 500 – the tracks actually have bends and chicanes)

Rock Stars as Kids

Ever wondered what Ozzy looked like as a kid? Want proof that Marilyn Manson was a speccy nerd before he sold his soul to santa. Or maybe you didn’t realise quite how cute Kurt Cobain was (before he decided to rearrange his face rather dramatically). Check out the baby photos of these and more at Whiplash! O Mais Completo Site de Rock! (apparently)

UrbanDictionary ‘Realworld Definitions’

I ended up on this site earlier today for the first time and I’ve just been sent it by one of our regulars (Hi Martyn) so it looks like UrbanDictionary is fast becoming an essential site to visit. It’s both serious and silly at the same time – go here if you don’t understand new phrases you hear on this site (like NSFW, goatse or bukkake – that way you won’t end up looking at dodgy pr0n at work like you would if you searched for these phrases on google)

Diet K: Supercharging KaZaA!

Last week the makers of Kazaa forced the makers of KazaaLite (the adware-free souped-up version of Kazaa) to shut down. Most sites hosting KazaaLite have been shut down already and even if you already had KazaaLite, you may find that it won’t work any more. IF that’s the case then go get the full version of Kazaa and the adware-removing plugi-in Diet K. Using Diet-K should put you back to where you were when you were using KazaaLite. If you are still running Kazaa on it’s own then you really ought to get this – it’ll help clean up your machine.

Other handy tools for cleaning up your machine and protecting it from spyware include SpyBot and Ad-aware.

Mind you, I haven’t used Kazaa for ages, personally I pay a £6/$9 per 6Gb (or one month, whichever comes sooner) subscription to Easynews and grab everything I need from there. If you use newsgroups for downloads then you might want to check out Nforce to see if the file you’re downloading is actually what you think it is.

The Hello World Project (or how to send obscene messages to UN Delegates)

Today, the UN World Summit on the Information Society is taking place in Geneva. The best bit is that, if you would like to send the UN WSIS delegates a message (however obscene), you can have it projected by laser onto a 140 metre tall water fountain in sight of the conference. You can send your message via the Web or via text message using the HelloWorld Project website and watch it being projected through the local webcams.

Virtual Office Supplies

It’s getting harder and harder to steal stuff from work these days. If you’re more interested in stationery than bonking the secretary in the stationery cupboard then you can satisfy your office-supply cravings with a VirtualStapler or pop some VirtualBubblewrap. If you’d rather have the secretary then you’ll probably want a Virtual Cigarette.

More fun with Google Image search – time for another round of ‘One of the images is not like the others’. Today we bring you;

Google Search: Spaghetti Junction and

skyscrapers.

Can you spot the odd one out?

*EDIT: looks like both of the results on both these pages have changed – it’s been Google-bombed or something so don’t worry if you don’t get the joke when you read this.

I never knew there could be so much to the art of nose-picking but Proud Pickers have taught me otherwise. They have animated gifs, extreme nose-picking (including nostril hair waxing), even a whole section especially for nose-picking in theme parks. Another one for the TMTOTH dept (Too Much TIme On Their Hands)

Thar she doesn’t blow

Currently I’m addicted to playing Puzzle Pirates. An online game that involves puzzles and, you guessed it, pirates.

I don’t play games online much, because they’re nearly all FPS or stratagy games and, well, I kinda suck at them. This game , however, has so many different games (fighting, drinking, sailing, bilging, caprpenting, brawling, distilling, ….you get the idea) that there’s bound to be one or two everyone will like and can get good at. There’s so much more to this game, but this post is sound too much like an advert already.

Now, although it’s a subscription thing, you don’t have to pay (but you will be slightly limited as to what you can do) you can just download the client and away you go. I will say though, it’s going properly live on Monday so that might change. Untill then you can swash your buckle to your hearts content.
