GUIdebook: Graphical User Interface gallery

Whilst trying to settle an argument with a friend over Amiga vs Atari I just stumbled onto GUIdebook – a Graphical User Interface gallery. It’s got all the desktops and icons for virtually every Operating System that you can think of (except Microsoft Bob). Weirdly compulsive.

Beetroot Urine

Beetroot p1ss – unusually for this site, that’s not the name of some obscure death metal band. No, it’s just that it has come to my attention the eating lots of beetroot on an empty stomach makes your plss turn pink. Luckily, I hate the stuff so it’s not an experiment I’ll be attempting myself.

Phatbot Trojan Analysis

Is it just me or are the latest trojans getting bloody scary – Phatbot has more features and destructive capabilities per line of code than any piece of commercial software I can think of.

Microsoft Demographics

Meet Carlos – he’s a stereotypical MSN user according to this cheesy breakdown of MSN demographics. Except he’s not real – if you want to see the real Carlos then have a look here – now that’s much more accurate!

The Accidental Video Game Pr()n Archive

Geeks with too much time on their hands have combined their love of pr()n with their love of computer games to create The Accidental Video Game Porn Archive – a collection of screengrabs from computer games that feature compromising postions. (SFW)

thanks to the convalescing Dr.Cooper for this one – glad to see that you’re putting your time off to good use!

The Ladies of Star Trek – The Original Series

Looking at these photos of the Ladies of Star Trek – can you work out what the casting requirements were for getting a job in the original series. Casting couch anyone?

Cookin’ With Google – updated

The queen of research resources and all things Googley, Tara Calishain, has updated her Cookin’ With Google hack to include a drop-down box with different types of recipes especially for diabetics, Atkins diet etc. It’s such a simple idea – you type in whatever you have in your fridge and cupboards and the tool comes back with recipes using those ingredients. Genius – it’s what the Internet fridge was made for.

The unspoken word

Nasa have reportedly come up with a device that takes the amazing military throat microphones one step further. The sub-vocaliser can intepret words before they are actually spoken. It’s only one step away from telepathy and then we’re all doomed. Doomed I tell you!

New Yeti Sport – Seal Bounce

The third in the superb series of penguin-bashing games is now out – this time it’s called Seal Bounce and it’s every bit as cute and addictive as the others in the series.

Expect to see this mailed to your inbox about 20 times before the end of the week (then be dead smug that you saw it here first!)

Ninja Breakdance moves

This is a very cool video – these guys do gymnastics that are a combination of martial arts and breakdancing. It’s amazing to watch and well worth the download times. They even have the decency to include some bloopers to make the rest of us feel less inadequate.

Aluminum Cube Case mod

We normally don’t post off-the-shelf case mods as it’s considered cheating round these parts. To every rule there have to be exceptions and the Xoxide UFO Ultimate Aluminum Cube is one such exception. It’s a thing of beauty (although a clearer photo is available here).

Japanese Paper Robots to cut out and keep

Robots made out of paper are never going to destroy all humans and take over the world so these Japanese Paper robots only fulfill the first of Asimov’s Laws of Robotics but they’re still very cool indeed. In case the Japanese writing is confusing, just click on one of the robots and you should get a .pdf file that you can print out which will make the robot – it’s geek origami!

The Bovine Rectal Palpation Simulator

The Bovine Rectal Palpation Simulator is slightly better described as a virtual cow’s arse, because it’s clearly so much better than sticking your hand up a real cow’s backside. Bet the virtual version doesn’t cover your arm in poop.

Bizarre Russian Dolls

You know those Russina dolls? The wooden skittle-shaped dolls that nest inside each other? Well, apparently there’s a market for bizarre music-themed ones featuring people like AC/DC, Britney SPears etc. You’ve gotta be some kind of compulsive to want a set of freakish looking Barbara Streisand dolls although the Gorillaz ones are quite funky.

Smiley Lore :-)

How many of you actually realised that Smiley hasn’t always existed? It was first suggested by Scott Fahlman in the early 80′s. Luckily the only attempt so far to patent the smiley was a joke – although I bet AOL have spent lots of money trying to figure out a way of doing it.

Hacking with Google

Using Google as part of a hacker’s arsenal is nothing new, but as a Google obsessive, I’m always amazed when people are surprised that it’s so easy to get information from Google – after all, that’s what it’s there for. GoogleDorks gives you some more ‘practical’ examples of what’s out there. A fun one I like is seeing who’s having major server problems by searching for server-monitoring related phrases – something like this. I need to get out more.

One of these images is not like the others redux

Yet another in our long, long series of Google Image searches where on image on the results page is not what you’d expect – a GIS for ‘blue screen of death’ (with safesearch off) gives one very NSFW image!

As home desktops go, I’ve yet to see one better specc’d than the Mach 3.8. Combine it with a set of Grand Canyon monitors and you’ve got the most impressive BSOD ever.

One of these things is not like the others

Try a search for ‘power tool’ in google. See if you can spot something that doesn’t quite fit. Before you do… just think if you’ll be offended by what you’ll see (come on – use some imagination here – what do you think it’s likely to be?). Needless to say NSFW. Clicky.

Absolutely cool, totally groovy, and indescibably snazzy. Bosh them into a USB port and off we go. Laaaaaahvly! Simple low-tech case mod for those who don’t actally give much of a monkeys about how their pooter looks. (The item shown here isn’t as good as mine which slides through redgreenblueyellowcyanmagentawhite, or can have any of these colours still or be sound sensitive!! Hurrah! You can have your own little computer disco… obviously if you didn’t have any friends)

suicidegirls.co.uk – not what you’d think

Ok, so there’s the famous website Suicidegirls.com which is a journal/dating/exhibitionist community for for alternative/goth/rock chicks which has been around for a long time but can anyone tell me why suicidegirls.co.uk points to the Conservative parties website? (for our US readers – that’s like pointing to the Republicans site – really not what you’d expect)

Comic Book Gorillarama – Monkeys in comicx

I have a unhealthy obsession with monkeys (or simians of any form) so I;m a big fan of Comic Book Gorillarama which is the most definitive listing of apes in comics I’ve seen (ok, I admit it’s a fairly limited field of interest but I’m happy to have found it!)

Silly Chemicals

OK – so yes, I’m an ex-scientist. So? I’m not ashamed! However, I find molecules with silly names a constant source of entertainment. Perhaps I’m sad but I bet you giggle at molecules called ‘arsole’, ‘moronic acid’ and ‘vaginatin’.
