Squids revenge

Henri Cartier Bresson referred to the perfect photograph as capturing “the decisive moment”. A wonderful example of this is the young men being frozen in time mid barf (see post a few days ago). Another perfect example is encapsulated by the Angry Squid

If anyone you know is leaving their job, then why not let Pete & Dud send them off in style. Just change the ‘grom’ in the URL to whatever their name is.

PHP – New designer drug!

Student Suspended Over Suspected Use of PHP. Thank goodness I’ve never been caught – I’ve been experimenting with PHP for a couple of years now, often knocking it back with a MySQL chaser! I had no idea it could be so dangerous!

Chicken F1sting

I’ve just been sent a mail that was sent out to the Capital Radio network here in the UK. It had

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

attached with the message “Has anyone tried this”? I played it in all innocence and promptly spat my tea over my monitor. A classic WTF moment.

Star Wars cleanup on Mac technology

I spend a lot of time in datacentres as part of my job but none of my kit is anything like as neat as this kit (needs Quicktime VR). It’s the kit that was used to clean up the new release of Star Wars. I’m not sure that the images do it justice though – I reckon after a Mac had done it’s job it will look more like this. (send me your Mac-loving flames to the usual address – I’m out of toilet paper).

Fat Lass vs Gravity

Yes, you know what’s going to happen, yes it does happen, but blimey – gravity’s quite a bugger for fat lasses when you think about it.

It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these – I thought for a moment we’d run out… au contraire! Here’s a lovely one: xbox live. Please note the Google Safe Search condition of this search: (strict filtering filth success = 1337 Googling. By George, I do believe I may have just set a new precedence)

Marc Perkel Rantz: Download Fahrenheit 9/11 Here

Marc Perkel has taken Michael Moore up on his statement that he has no problem with people downloading his movie and has just bought a load of bandwith for a few weeks to let everyone download Fahrenheit 9/11. It’s an interesting concept – so far I haven’t seen any evidence of the cinema or dvd sales of this movie being harmed but I don’t know many people who haven’t seen this excellent (but admittedly flawed) film so it’ll be interesting to compare the industry stats about this movie in a few months time with other major movies.

John Peel dead

News just in – I’m extremely sad to report that John Peel has died whilst on holiday in Peru. John Peel was responsible for shaping the face of British (and the rest of the world) music for the last 40 years. In the whole of that time he was the only consistently music-focused fan who paid little attention to trends and fads and he introduced a huge amount of people to music that they would not have had the opportunity to listen to otherwise. I don’t say this lightly but John Peel was the best DJ that the world has ever seen – just to show you how respected he was, in the last 5 minutes, I’ve received 7 emails with the bad news. Who else would play Napalm Death next to a Greig Concerto?

Turkish Star Trek

Something Awful are running a review of ‘Turist Omer in Star Trek’ a 1973 Turkish movie which took a popular actor (in Turkey) called Turist Omer and basically stuck him into a low-rent rip-off of Star Trek. Just one look at the photos nd you’ll see quite how poor this was. Still worth a giggle just for the fact that they renamed Spock to Mister Spak. thanks Imran

Brain in a Dish Flies Plane

When I was doing my edumacation thing at uni I did a thesis on neural networks and their application to the prediction of protein structure blah blah tedious. Neural networks in those days were computer models of how they thought the brain worked and how you could forge pathways through this mathematical alogorhythm thus ‘teaching’ the software how to do something (I believe car registration plate character recognition works using this principle). At that time, never (in my wildest dreams) did I expect to see neural networks being actually created out of real neurons and applied to real life situations… Let alone being able to create a brain in a dish that can fly a plane!

Guess the 41 songs in 58 seconds

This is damn hard. Using careful deployment of the pause and rewind button in winamp, I have so far managed to identify about 15 of the songs in this One-Minute Medley of tunes. There are 41 in all so I’ve got a way to go yet. (Luckily the answers are on the site but I’ll leave that until tomorrow)

Next up are a loads of video clips that will make you go ‘Ooh‘, ‘Eek‘ and ‘Wow‘.

Sick link warning

If you find this kind of thing unpleasant then I suggest you really don’t click this link. It is an image that graphically shows a suicide jumper moments after impact. The face of the surrounding crowds are worth seeing: they say a thousand words as they watch the innards become outards.

Homeless Identity kits

I found this idea quite a fascinating one – it’s an ‘art’ project to record the possessions that some homeless people in London have. These ‘Identity kits’ are quite telling and it’s strangely voyeuristic to look at them without seeing the people who own them. I found it interesting how many of them had a passport and the photo of Jack Nicholson (in the eShining) was a weird thing to carry when the sum of someone’s possessions is only a pocketful of detritus.
