“Finding” versus “Looting”

According to newspaper photo captions, white people “find” food from stores abandoned because of Hurricane Katrina, but brown people “loot”
Very sad.

From the ‘I Want One NOW!’ Dept

Most of our readers will be aware of home made arcade machines using MAME but I couldn’t resist posting these Personal Video Arcade machines – not only are the beautiful but they’ll also take XBox or Playstation inputs and you can buy additional add-ons such as Steering Wheels or even cup holders.

All donations willingly accepted.

MI5 – Geek job going

I’ve just been sent a link to a job that I thought I’d share with you. MI5 are recruiting for a Network Security Specialist which is the kind of thing that I know a bit about. What alarms me most of all is the salary – it might seem like a lot of money to people outside the industry but those wages are right at the very bottom of the scale for that kind of job and doesn’t seem to have any London-weighting to it. I worry for our country when we can’t even pay industry standard rates for important jobs – & by their own admission it may take up to 8 months to process your application. Not a shining beacon to set an example and give hope to the citizens!

Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical

I hadn’t heard about this new version of Reefer Madness until our Alan Cumming post the other day. Years ago, I saved up money from my first job to send off to America for a video copy of the original 1936 propaganda film (& if you haven’t seen it then track down a copy – you’ll love it – it’s one of the most unintentionally funny movies ever). The trouble was, when it finally arrived, it was an American video tape and thus NTSC format which my video player wouldn’t play so it took me another year to save up to pay someone to transfer it over to PAL so I could watch it. The new version turns the 1936 straight-laced movie into a hi-camp, all-singing, all-dancing, high-falutin’ romp. The dvd is out in October (or is now available from your favourite p2p/torrent/usenet servers).

Roll Over The Clover

Evil, Malicious, Spiteful. Those are all words that sprung into my head when I found this 4 Leaf Clover game. The idea is simple, merely find the 17 mutant clover leaves, but why oh why inflict something this utterly pointless on the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m up to 4 out of 17 so far but I just don’t know why I’m still playing yet I can’t stop.

Scientists Create the Hardest Material known to man – it’s Diamond!

It’s commonly known that diamond is the hardest substance known to man. Until now that is…

Scientists have come up with a sunbstance that is harder than diamond and guess what – it’s also diamond! Confused? Well, one way of putting it would be to say that although the material consists of diamond, it is made from carbon-60 (my favourite – buckyballs). Clear? Good.

PSP Goodness

For everyone due to be getting their PSPs when they’re finally, finally released this week, here are a couple of handy links to get you started.

You can go down the homebrew route and grab a load of free software handily packaged up together in one customisable bundle from PSPBrew or if your PSP comes with firmware 2.0 already installed (which means you cannot run homebrew software as it must have 1.50 or lower as its firmware to load) then head over to Slashdot for a decent run-down of how the built-in browser works.

Spot the Difference

Simple but addictive game of Spot the Difference – I didn’t realise it was addictive until I noticed I was still playing it 5 minutes later. Then I got upset that you get the same pictures repeated occassionally but with different differences.

A plethora of cool, free image viewers

Stumbled across a couple of sites using this funky SimpleViewer program yesterday and was impressed enough to track it down to investigate further. There’s an admin upgrade for it done by a fan of the program which you can get here

Alternatively, you might prefer the postcard viewer version which is very pretty or how about the Flickr version or the postcard viewer – and it’s all free!

Geo-location Visitor log for gromblog

Funky new feature for the site courtesy of GVisit – just follow this link to see where in the world the last 20 visitors to the site came from. Obviously if you’re using a proxy it won’t be accurate but it’s a fun feature to have – there’s even an RSS feed for it! I’ve stuck a permenant link at the bottom of the right hand bar of the site.

213 Things Skippy Can’t Do

Military humour normally passes me by completely – something to do with having a utterly opposing mindset to warmongering macho men. I’ve finally found someone who seems to have been lifted directly from the pages of Catch 22 or from the screens of M*A*S*H. Skippy isn’t in the military anymore but is gracious enough to have resurrected his 213 Things Skippy Can’t Do site. Sample quotes;

54. ‘Napalm sticks to kids’ is *not* a motivational phrase.

33. Not allowed to chew gum at formation, unless I brought enough for everybody.

34. (Next day) Not allowed to chew gum at formation even if I *did* bring enough for everybody.

Google Talk just released

After much speculation, Google have just sneaked out Google Talk. It’s a combination of AIM/Trillian/MSN Messenger/ICQ type of chat but also features Skype style VOIP (Voice over IP or in plain english, phone calls over the internet using a headset and microphone with your broadband connection). As with all Google products, it looks clean and simple but I’l have to give it a proper test later…

(some more early information right here).

Another Unnecessarily Exhaustive Website

As part of our series of Unnecessarily Exhaustive Websites which give far too much information about a very limited subject, I’ve been pointed to the Pinball Rules archive. It fulfills all of our criteria (it’s overlong, has way too much detail to be useful to anyone but the creator and most importantly, it scares me slightly that someone has has bothered to make it and lastly, you probably wouldn’t want to be locked in an elevator with the site owner).

Thanks Dan

This Spartan Life

This is awesome! This Spartan Life is a talk show filmed live from a bunch of X-Box Lives playing Halo. The guests, host and crew are all in-game and becuse it’s a public server, people just join in and start shooting. Very insane, beautifully done and the dance routines are stupendous. I’m tempted to say it’s even better than Red Vs Blue.
