New Folk Hero

Sometimes you stumble across a little article tucked away in a newspaper that makes you say “Whaa?!”. This story about a guy who managed to con several banks into handing over 5million Euros in such an article. It reads like something out of James Bond.

The 2005 Ig Nobel Prize Winners

The winners of this year’s Ig Nobel awards for improbable research have been announced. Favourites this year include the paper on pressure build-up inside penguins entitled “Pressures Produced When Penguins Pooh — Calculations on Avian Defaecation” and “Will Humans Swim Faster or Slower in Syrup?” from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Journal as well as papers on artificial testicles for dogs and brain activity in locusts forced to watch Star Wars.

NTL Announces Sky+ Equivalent

UK cable co NTL are finally joining this century with the announcement of a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) – it’ll be a hrad drive based system that will allow you to pause, record and rewind live tv and view different channels in different rooms. Let’s see how riddled with annoying protection it is.

Google Calendar

Just noticed the link for Google calendar is now active but nothing there yet – wonder when it’s going live?

I also note that GMail is being renamed in the UK to googlemail after Google couldn’t resolve a longstanding dispute with another company so anyone signing up for Gmail in the UK will henceforth have ‘…@googlemail.com’ address but existing users or users from the rest of the world will still be able to get gmail.com addresses.

Woman Thou Art God

Woman Thou Art God is the website of Rasa von Werder who is a buxom, porn-freak feminist fundamentalist Christian who is a ma5turbator, a preacher, a (probable) lesbian and thinks all men love pr0n, and if they don’t they’re lying. Just think of it as a character study. It’s strangely car-crashy.

You can skip to about 2/3 through to see it but stay tuned for the superb aftermath music.

Jack Thompson – Dickwad

I’ve been following this story for a few days now but have only finally got round to posting it. I’ve not got the space to go into all the details so if you’ll forgive me, I’ll post a few links for you to read so you can get the whole story.

Jack Thompson is a lawyer who hates video games and blames them for all of society’s ills. He came up with the superb (sorry – I meant cretinous) idea of saying he’d give away $10,000 to charity if someone would design and release a game that followed his plot outline. This is where

PennyArcade first got involved. They have raised a magnificent amount of money through their Child’s Play charity which relies on donations from these evil gamers that Jack despises so much.. Quite rightly, they thought that they were getting a bum rap from Jack and emailed him to say so. Jack phoned them up and launched into a tirade. The next day they emailed him back and he returned their mail with another harsh phone call threatening to sue them (for what?).

Today brings the news that someone took Jack up on his offer and created a GTA mod to comply with his offer and get the money given to charity. Except that Jack now claims his offer was satire.

So how did Penny Arcade deal with this? – They donated $10,000 to charity in Jack’s name.

For this they are superheroes of tthe highest order.

Some further reading for you.

Escape from Rhetundo Island

Don’t hate me for the amount of time you’re about to waste on this – Escape from Rhetundo Island is another frustrating puzzler in the same vein as Hapland 2 (and obviously the original Hapland too).

I won’t give you too many clues (I’m up to level 8 so far but I think that’s my lot) but make sure you have Flash 8 – Flash 7 will look like it is working but you won’t see most of what you need – the clue is in level 2 – if it looks impossible then you probably need to upgrade your version of flash. Some spoilers available here)

Doctor Who new spin-off series – Torchwood

For all the sci-fi nerds reading – this will probably be old news to you but for the benefit of everyone else, here’s an announcement from the BBc that they are going to be filming a Doctor Who spin-off series called Torchwood. It’ll be shown late next year and features the writing skills of Russell T Davies who scripted the recent Doctor Who revival series. It’s based around the Captain Jack character that Davies introduced near the end of the last series.

I’m Popular – How one man wreaked havoc on MySpace

Samy is popular. In fact he was one of the most popular people on the planet a few days ago. Not that anyone who had linked to his MySpace profile actaully knew who he was, instead he had created a simple ‘worm’ that spread exponentially across the site. Here’s his story – enjoy seeing how easily someone ruin a site that FOX recently paid $580million for.

Aytozon – compare eBay & Amazon prices

Here’s a nifty idea – use Aytozon to compare eBay & Amazon product prices side by side. It’s not perfect by a long way yet but I’m hoping it will get there eventually. (the ability to use regional variations of the sites would be a big start ie: amazon.co.uk and ebay.co.uk, the ability to save searches is always useful too).

Unpredictable Porridge – The John peel music legacy…

More John Peel – John’s son, Tom Ravenscroft, has announced that he will be supervising the new site, John Peel Music, set up between Universal records and John’s own record label, Dandelion Records.

Unsigned bands and artists from around the world will be invited to upload their music to the site and visitors will decide on the strongest of the online demos, which could lead to being picked up for a release with full major label support. Good luck to them.
