Unnecessarily Exhaustively Informative Websites

“This document started in the 1980s as a short tip-sheet, organized geographically, with sections for regions or specific countries. Then about 1990, everything changed — the breakup of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, the breakups of Jugoslavia and Czechoslovakia.”.
Absolutely everything you want to know about postal addresses throughout the entirety of pretty much everywhere including USA, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, the Moon, Magrathea etc. Give me strength!! If you can think of a use for this page please let me know! Ladies and gentlemen, Frank’s compulsive guide to postal addresses

information aesthetics

The Infothestics website was sent to me a while back by Dan (I think – apologies if not). It calls itself a site about ‘data visualization & visual design’ which is a bit cumbersome but fairly accurate – don#t be put off by the geekiness, it has links to lots of fascinating way of visualising data such as the Who hates who in the middle east diagram or the Aquaplay water bubble display to name but two.

Stop Motion Video

It must have taken way more than a day to film and edit this superb Stop Motion Video but it was well worth it. Looks to me like it was filmed in Amsterdam but I might be mistaken.

I’ve heard of “painting the town red” but…

Some flats in Glasgow (thats “apartment blocks in Glass-Gow” to our American guests), 70,000 litres of paint, 35 miles of copper wire and loads of high explosives – hot on the heels of half a grillion coloured balls bouncing down the streets of San Fransico – The new Sony Bravia advert pictures (and a short video clip)

Upside-Down-Ternet

Neighbours stealing your wireless internet feed? Why not have some fun at their expense? (Personally I prefer to use packet sniffers to grab their credit card numbers, then order things to be delivered when they’re out with the instructions to ‘leave with neighbour’ ;o) )

Fascinating article about the life of sewer workers in London. Should appeal to all the subterranean explorers who frequent this site.

Severance

Severance looks like an amusing movie but I’m a bit concerned that they rely so heavily on the ‘if you liked Shaun of the Dead then you’ll like this’. The game is great fun though and I did laugh out loud at the trailer – especially the foot in the fridge bit.

SpareKeys.com

Excellent idea here. SpareKeys is a company that holds a set of keys on your behalf so if you ever lose your house keys or even if you wish to leave a set for visitors to use your house whilst you’re away, you can do so in safety. The odd thing is that their main security feature is that they never know your address – they won’t deliver your keys to within 100 metres of your house and you don’t even need to enter your address for payment.
Shame it’s so London-centric.

Fireworks Factory Explosion

Ever wondered what an Explosion in a Fireworks Factory would be like? Noisy for a start! Alos, why on earth would you build a firework factory next to a housing estate?
thanks Chris

Merry-Go-Pwned

Chavs + Playpark + too much free time – brains + scooter = much pain. I really hope these girls were ok after this but I have to say it doesn’t look like they would be. Same vid but slowed down to prove it wasn’t a fake here.
Not pleasant but thanks our kid

YouTube has Pr0n Clone

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for someone to setup a youtube clone dedicated solely to pr0n. Wonder if it will either die due to copyright issues and too many hits or be a massive success. That’s my excuse for bookmarking it anyway! (link goes to SFW site discussing the NSFW site)

Tampon Shooter Blowgun

People with too much time on their hands seem to fall into two categories, those who run blogs and those who make stupid things for other people with too much time on their hands to blog about. The Tampon Shooter Blowgun was clearly made by people who fall into both categories. Check out the rest of the site for more tampon related oddness.

C0ckolate drink

Why would anyone want to market a product that instantly puts almost half the population of the world off using it. Mind you, women and non-hetero men will probably love the C0ckOLada drink.
The tagline is a beauty too!(NSFW)

Guest Editors required

We’re going to try a little experiment soon and I’d like some volunteers from our readers. Quite simply we have many readers who supply us with a regular supply of good links and I thought it would be a nice idea to allow some of our readers to take over the site for a day at a time. The idea is very basic. Let me know if you want to be a guest editor for a day and then we’ll post any contributions you want on your guest day. We only need between 3-7 posts to go up and you don’t need a blogger account – I’ll post them for you (I do want to retain some basic editorial control to avoid re-posts or unsuitable material (although with our editorial policy, there is very little that would be deemed unsuitable!). You’ll also be allowed one personal post to advertise your own site or whatever you want (within reason). It will only be an occasional thing so shouldn’t interrupt the usual flow of gibberish from us.
First up will be a day of posts from regular contributor Kim as I’ve got a huge backlog of posts from her that I’ve haven’t posted yet (apologies Kim)
Emails to the usual address if you’re interested.

Ok, so it’s not the most portable printer I’ve ever seen, not to mention the lack of portability but there’s still something very cool about the AMOEBA wave generator which can create images on the surface of water using controlled waves.

Sly & The Family Stone – Talent Show Winners

Since we’ve been posting some brilliant old musical vids recently, Solomon dug out this Sly & The Family Stone video from 1968 of them winning a $10,000 talent competition – let’s face it, you wouldn’t want to go up against them now would you?

Penn & Teller Do the Cup and Ball Trick

I’m an unashamed fan of Penn & Teller and thought I’d share this recent tv appearance of theirs where they not only do the classic Cup and Ball Trick with clear cups and a potato. Two bonus kudos – firstly to Penn for calling his daughter ‘Moxie Crimefighter Gillete’ and secondly for making a decent movie solely about one joke – the Aristocrats which helped make a long train journey a lot more bearable for me the other week.

New York Dolls in ‘not bad’ shocker’

Despite the death many moons ago of the iconic Johnny Thunders, the New York Dolls have just released their first album in almost 30 years and I’ve gotta say that I’m quite astounded that it doesn’t suck. In fact, as you can see from the Dance Like a Monkey video, it’s not bad at all – the whole album is in the same vein and whilst there’s no ‘Personality Crisis’, it’s a damn fine rock and roll album – far better than they have any right to produce at their age and having lived their lives. The only downer is that we probably have arch-to55er Morrissey to thank for getting them to reform.

The Sesame Street Sessions

Kid’s TV… it ain’t like it used to be! These days we have The Fimbles and Balamory… but you bet yer sorry a55 I’d rather my young daughter watched something a little more ‘educational’ when she sat down in front of the gogglebox… something to develop her counting ability by expanding her knowledge of
The One… something like Stevie Wonder playing Superstition LIVE on Sesame Street followed by a b1tch1n’ vocoder number! Get Down!

Game Joy

Today’s game theme is vehicular manipulation. Firstly, bikes – Trials Bike on Ice (I’ve been playing an hour already and the levels just keep on coming!). Secondly, a slightly more sedate affair, horses – Show Jumping (I got level 3 down to 1:10 but could not get the last two seconds off!). Enjoy. NSFW due to liberally distributed t1tty banners.

Portal Demonstration from Valve

Valve, makers of the hugely popular Half Life games have shown off their new invention. Any oe who has played Half Life 2 will be aware that the simple addition of one new weapon, the gravity gun, can completely change gameplay and add a whole new dimension, breathing a new lease of life to a tired format. They’ve taken the ‘whole new dimension’ bit a too literally this time with their Portal gun – check out the demo and you’ll see what I mean. Looks awesome.

Colour is the new black & white

This is a pretty cool optical illusion that makes you percieve a black and white image as colour.
