Gecko Love Story

IT’s cute and gross, it’s a Gecko Love Story. (Actually it’s a Thai advert for ceiling tiles!)

The Impossible Quiz

They ain’t joking when they call this the Impossible Quiz. The incredibly frustrating quiz would be a better name (oh, and it’s not only a Flash file but an 8Mb load too). If you do attempt it, you might want some of the answers to help you along.

The BBC on The Apocalypse

If you’ve got an hour to spare, make yourself a brew and sit down to watch this fantastic BBC Horizon documentary about 5 different apocalyptic outcomes of the Earth as predicted by scientists. It’s a massively informative documentary graced with great special effects, plots and subplots, wonderful direction and enough terror to leave you sweating. How will you survive? Sleep tight!

Go Go Gadget Flute

The field of cool flautists isn’t exactly an overflowing one. Try to think of a famous fulte player. I got as far as Ian Anderson before running out of others. But then I heard Greg Patillo (Pattillo -sp?) who manages to beatbox at the same time as play his instrument. There’s not many on the interweb who haven’t seen his inspector gadget remix judging by the amount of views it’s got. Check out his other tunes here including his Mario theme tune cover.

The Ultimate Recording Hoax – Update

After our story last week about the classical recordings purporting to be by Joyce Hatto which were revealed to be fakes derived from many different sources, her husband and the main culprit has confessed. It does seem that Joyce herself was an innocent party in this and that the blame lies squarely with her husband but I’ll wager there’ll be a movie being written about this already.

Samurai Sith Lord

Star Wars completists will need to go and rob a bank to get hold of one of the new Samurai Vader collectibles. I’m not really into fan merchandise but this is pretty sweet and would be a decent spin-off idea.

Stamping on Hitler

I’ll hopefully be moving house in the next few months and even though I’ll be looking for a few new home furnishings, I somehow doubt that I’ll be investing in a Hitler rug.

Photos of Lost Cities

Some beautiful shots of many Lost Cities around the world. Like the site owner, I’m fascinated with how entire cities and populations can be ‘lost’ over time. Please have a nosy around the rest of the site as there’s much of goodness here.

SNUB TV

Today I’ve had a bit of trip down memory lane courtesy of youtube. I went looking for videos of Ivor Cutler (my daughter is nuts for his song ‘Mud’) and the Fatima Mansions which in turn led me to recall the outstanding, but short-lived, tv show Snub TV. If you want to see old footage of many awesome bands from 1988-1989 then click and enjoy The Fall, New Order, Cocteau Twins, The KLF, Fugazi, Pixies, Manic Street Preachers (from the same time that the b*stard drummer stole my girlfriend, but that’s another story) and Ultra Vivid Scene’s version of ‘MErcy Seat’. Even more clips here including Galaxie 500 – one of my all-time favourite badns for purely sentimental reasons.
Today I wish I was 16 again.

Beatbox Jacko

We all like to have a bit of a poke at good ol’ Wacko Jacko, don’t we? Myself included (and, please, no jokes about him having a ‘poke’ at children!). The thing that we seem to forget after all this mockery and japery is that Mr Jackson was, once upon a time, a phenomenally talented bloke and all he really suffers from is a combination of artistic temprement and constant public exposure from the age of 5. If you need a little refresher about the sort of thing he can do then check out what he did when Oprah put him on the spot and asked him to do a bit of a capella. This really whips the pants off 99% of beatboxing I’ve ever heard (again, no jokes about ‘whipping pants off small boys’)

Folding Paper in Half Twelve Times

It’s an oft-repeated fact that you can’t fold any piece of paper in half more than 7 or maybe 8 times. The thing is, despite being quite easily provable on the surface of it, apparantly it’s simply not true. Britney Gallivan has not only managed to Fold Paper in Half Twelve Times but has also defined it mathematically. (reading the various articles it seems like the catch is that even though she is folding the paper in half, it’s not actually a square sheet.)

Perplexcity One – The cube has been found

If, like me, you like puzzles then you’ll probably have come across Perplex City, a game where you buy puzzles on cards which combine together into a treasure hunt for a £100,000 prize. Well, it’s been found and the winner has written a very good write up and Flickr photoset which highlights how close everybody was to finding the hidden cube.

Although it crashed magnificently when it first went up last week, the new Disposal Services Agency website is now back up and running if you fancy buying ex-Ministry of Defence goodies from a 144Tonne ship, a REIMS F406 cargo plane to a pair of waterproof socks – a bizarre collection indeed.

A Love Story

If you don’t believe in destiny then maybe this Love Story will convince you otherwise. It’s the story of two nudists from opposite sides of the world who met online and agreed to get married after streaking at a football match. Aww, bless their little cotton (NSFW) socks! (Yeah I know they’re technically not wearing any socks btu you know what I mean).

So You Think You’re a Gamer?

Come and have a go if you think you’re nerdy enough – take the Ultimate Game Quiz. I was disappointed with a meagre 74% score but I answered a couple of questions incorrectly that I should have known and probably would have got if I had actually paid attention.

pic2color is a very handy web design tool which lets you input the URL of an image and it’ll return a colour palette for the image and produce the HEX number for the colours used. Neat.

Michel Gondry Vs Rubik’s Cube

Michel Gondry, famed movie and music video director can apparently, not only solve the rubix cube using his feet but also with his nose. Or can he? It was only after watching the nose video I suddenly realised that I’d been had and he’d cleverly faked the foot one. Nice work though.

Joyce Hatto – The Ultimate Recording Hoax

There’s already been a lot of press about the Joyce Hatto Hoax – here’s a good explanation if you haven’t seen it yet. I won’t go into great detail but basically a musician who died last year had been hailed as an undiscovered genius until late in her life when recordings surfaced that were of extremely high quality – and so they should be, they turn out to have been recorded by some well-known professional musicians. What fascinates me is the forensic work done and the sheer gall of Joyce’s husband in his conviction that they are genuine recordings.

Whilst exploring your new property you find a large barn in the trees. the door is padlocked shut and its all rusted solid. so you grind the padlock open…
