Sia – Buttons

The song’s not bad (not my cup of tea but not bad) but the video for Sia’s ‘Buttons’ is quite a brave one. It’s really simple and I sincerely doubt it’ll get played much in America as the networks just can’t get their head around a decent looking blonde girl being made to look very unflattering. When she performed on Jimmy Kimmel’s show she was much more acceptable (but still inventive).

Bringing the DS into the 80′s

Years ago when I was a struggling music producer (failed), I dreamt of having enough money to buy a stack of keyboards. I ended up building lots of electronic gizmos to make music with instead but my, how times have changed! You will shortly be able to get (in Japan only initially) a fully functional KORG DS-10 emulator for your Nintendo DS. If someone would come out with a midi interface for the DS then you could see the next Kraftwerk using just these cheap handhelds for professional music.

Urban Exploration of the Neverland Ranch

I’ve no idea how he managed it but Jon Haeber has taken some extraordinary photos of Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. There are more images on his Flickr account.
If you’re new to urban exploration then Jon’s got a great introduction video up on youtube.

New Video of BigDog

We’ve shown a video of the BigDog Quadruped Robot before but they’ve been working hard to spend the $10million funding they were given by DARPA and boy does it show. I still think it looks scarily biological (like two people bent over facing each other) but when you see if slipping and recovering froma stumble on ice, I’m sure your jaw will be nearer to your knees than your nose.

John Frusciante – free albums

John Frusciante is without a doubt one of the best (and one of the most erratic) guitarists in the world. When he’s on top form he’s unbeatable and he’s nice enough to be giving away some free albums on his website so you can judge for yourself. If you’re a big Red Hot Chili Peppers fan then some of his solo work might take you by surprise.

Lou Reed Upset By MP3 Quality

Ignore the article itself, it’s the headline ‘Lou Reed Upset By MP3 Quality; Has He Ever Listened To Velvet Underground Recordings?‘ that made me giggle. (& I still insist that Mo Tucker was the talented one in the VU!).

We’ve featured Weng Weng but I really liked this video for the Weng Weng Rap by the Chuds that KD sent me – it’s a fine tribute to the diminutive ass-kicking Phillippine crime-fighter.

How they used to invent video games

Did you ever wonder how someone ever come up with the idea of playing a frog who has to dodge trucks whilst crossing a road or a yellow circle who guzzles pills in an infinite maze? Then you’ve never had Brainstorming session like this!

kanYe West & Utah Saints

U, U, Utah Saints! Many of our readers will know Jez & Tim from the Utah Saints and I’m pleased to see that they’re finally getting some top-notch attention again for their ‘Something Good -08′ tune – the video even got blogged by kanYe West.
On a semi-related note, bosseinstein have been getting airplay on BBC Radio 1 recently – for their rather excellent new track featuring our old friend Wolf on drums.

Jay J. Armes, PI

Regular contributor Kim sent me a link to a very cool video last night about Jay J. Armes, Private Investigator. It was fascinatiing to watch and I couldn’t help think that it rang a vague bell in the fog that counts as my mind. It was only when I looked him up on wikipedia that I remembered him from Hawaii Five-0! The whole youtube video is like a flashback to the 70′s/80′s – marvel at his carphone and tv sets – inside a car!!!

Knuckle Tattoos

Knuckle Tattoos say a certain something about the wearer, normally that something is ‘I’m a true individual so I had ‘Gameover’, ‘GoodEvil’ or ‘Lovehate’ like thousands of other induhviduals out there’. Just so you can check if someone has already had your unique idea you can check out this site. My favourites are the random ‘Elephant’, ‘Waffles!’, ’55170054′ (which was apparently Martha Stewart’s prisoner number when she was banged up in 2004!), ‘Souptime’
Just to show how hardcore I am, here are my very own knucktats.
cheers KD

Very Cheap Remote shutter trigger for Digital Cameras

The Curious Cultural Journey of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah

Many people would agree that Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is one of the most beautiful songs and also one of the most covered. I, like many others think the Jeff Buckley version is pretty much the definitive one. This thesis on the curious cultural journey of Hallelujah makes for some interesting reading. Just please bear in mind that the song doesn’t need any more cover versions – you’re not Leonard Cohen, you’re not John Cale and you’re not Jeff Buckley so please, don’t inflict your poxy, emo-assed, amateur-hour sub-karaoke version on my ears or I will stab you. Repeatedly.
