Angola, it’s not like they said
Imagine the excellent tv series Long Way Down except with just a bunch of friends with no support vehicles or camera crew. Angola, it’s not like they said is the travelogue posted to this forums with superb photos and commentary.
Obecalp Tablets
A few years ago (before I was a daddy), the thought of Obecalp Cherry Chewable Placebo Tablets would have struck me as quite ridiculous but now I can see the point. I still wouldn’t buy them but they’ll still be 100% more effective than any homeopathic treatment. (The latter link is another great site done by beerpowerednoisefrenzy, a friend and co-author of A Little Book of Lies)
Buy n Large
Kaye’s sent me a link to a lovely Pixar site based around the forthcoming Wall-E movie due in a month or two. The Buy n Large site is a very clever spoof of a dull corporate site. There is a claim that this Buy n Large site is the largest, most extensive viral site ever but that seems to exclude any of the augmented reality viral sites knocking about. Can’t wait for the movie but here are some of the trailers out so far to keep you going – does anyone know how much of a part the vaunted ‘part live-action’ element will take?
Wolverog / Froverine?
Comic nerds rejoice, a real X-man (in frog form)
Redneck Power Window Winder
Since my car’s power windows are none too functional after a minor scrape a while back, I might actually use Red Green’s Redneck Power Windows solution!
Weezer do the meme thing
Weezer’s new video Pork and Beans is both clever and lazy. It features a large amount of familiar faces from internet memes like the numa numa guy, that tedious chocolate rain guy, that irritating ‘leave Britney alone’ idiot etc but it does make an amusing video – even your mum will have seen some of these originals. I presume they simply went to ROFLCON to sign them all up.
Man dykes
Have I blogged the awesomely titled men who look like old lesbians site before?
For Promotional Purposes Only
fppo is a music industry term meaning ‘For Promotional Purposes Only’ which neatly explains this site. Bands and DJs can upload mixes, live shows or individual tracks that they want people to hear. There’s a very wide mix of music including one mix of Norwegian Psychedelic Disco on there at the moment.
The Biggest Drawing ever
This guy supposedly packed a briefcase with GPS systems and then gave DHL an exact itinerary. He tracked the case and made the biggest drawing in the world. If it’s true that is – I notice the domain is registered to a design house in Stockholm and I’m not the only skeptic. IT would be cool if it was real but what do you think?
DimP myVideo
DimP is a Direct Manipulation Video Player. Got that? It’s a way of interacting with the timeline of a video using elements of the video itself instead of an intermediary control (like the more usual slider underneath). If that sounds complicated, well, it’s not really – check out the simple demo or the more advanced demo with explanations. I like the idea of using this within 3d animations and it also passes the most critical test for computer technology ie: can it be used for pr0n.
Penny Arcade Demo out now
It’s a holiday weekend here in the UK so if you’ve got nothing better to do then why not download the Penny Arcade Adventures Demo. It’s made by gamers, for gamers, looks awesome and there are versions for linux and Mac as well (yeah, I know – a Mac game!!!).
Doctorin’ The House
A real-life doctor’s Medical Reviews of House. Surely it’s not lupus again?
The Life of American Vagabonds
In the UK they’re known as crusties, grebos or travellers – you know the sort, almost always middle class and rebelling against some unspecified unfairness by growing dreadlocks but the American version takes it’s lead from the old railroad hobo and they even have a more romantic name – Vagabonds. I’ve got many friends like this – I used to hang around traveller camps back in the late 80′s – but one thing has always puzzled me – how hard is it to find water to have a wash? Even the most nomadic tribes in Africa manage basic hygiene – rebelling against cleanliness isn’t a fight worth having to my mind.

PS3 Laptop
Uber-modder Ben Heck has done yet another awesome mod. This time, building on his successes with the Wii laptop, XBox laptop and PS1 and 2 laptops, he’s finally finished the PS3 Laptop.
2girls1cup – the essay
I wonder why this essay about the infamous 2girls1cup video got 0% – maybe the author should have included some diagrams.
Interactive T-shirts
Shikisai is the collaboration of Japanese designer duo Noto-Fusai and they make some great interactive t-shirts. You can buy them from any of these places (but being ‘designer’ they are a bit more expensive than your usual apparel.
Ex-pr0n
Incredibly immature but great fun, oh and utterly NSFW even though you don’t actually see anything, are the ex-pr0n pictures.
That was NSFW folks.
Smart Cards
Some highly creative Business Card Designs. I’m mostly interested in the cheap, innovative ones like the second hand card idea – that’s cool.
Cute Overload
Yeondoo Jung has recreated children’s drawings using photgraphs to quite stunning (and very cute) effect.
cheers Kim
Read A Book
Some of you may be familiar with the Read A Book track from DJ Yoda & Dan Greenpeace’s Unthugged 2: Electric Boogaloo. It’s listed on the Yoda album as being by G-Mike but on other sites as being by D’Mite – I’ve no idea which is right but it’s not only very hummable but also very, very funny, un-pc and totally NSFW unless you have headphones on.
*Edit* Here’s an interview with the creators of the video (featuring an very dumb CNN anchor).
2 Animals 1 Cup
Don’t worry, it’s not ‘that’ kind of video but it does literally have a monkey doing a handstand, on a goat, on a cup, on a tight rope. A pretty unique skill I think you’ll agree.
Honest College Ad
Steve asks ‘I wonder if anyone had shown this Honest College Ad to Loughborough Uni?’ (I think you can safely insert your local no-name uni/college here).
Stripped by a Mechanical Shovel
Full marks, not only to the operator but also to the incredibly brave girl who lets herself be Stripped by a Mechanical Shovel.
Mixwit vs Muxtape
I think we’ve posted about Muxtape before – it’s a mixtape site that allows you to upload 12 tracks and save them as your own mixtape that others can listen to. Mixwit does a similar thing but you don’t have to upload the songs, it searches for online versions of the songs and streams them directly. I’ve done a very quick grompilation using not overly obscure tracks but not particularly common ones – some odd things – you can’t change your username, some tracks are correct but show as unknown artist/track eg: track one is Negativland’s ‘Nesbitt’s Lime Soda’ – a very obscure track which was found but without ID3 tags (I presume). I’ll definitely play more with this and if any wishes, I’m happy to make a regular feature of dropping a new tape to you all every so often (nb. this tape is just a bunch of tracks on my current playlist – very random but not totally representative of my tastes).
I’m liking mixwit a lot but there’s a few tweaks I’d like to be made – it took me a while to find out how to change my username, you can’t see tracklistings and to see the track name (as well as FFwd/Rew/skip to next etc) you have to mouse over the tape window but these are minor issues.
Plantwire
I’ve still to managed to find the perfect, all-in-one, website for plant identification but Plantwire is a huge improvement on many of the others I’ve tried. It seems biased towards US plants but still found many of the tricky ones I tested it with. Oddly, it struggled with some of the more common ones which I didn’t think it would have any problems with – maybe they are just more indigenous to the UK than I thought. The colour picker is a nice touch and it’s also nice to be able to use common names as well as proper names – most sites use one or the other. If you are looking for a plant finder then this is a good place to start.
Groo
I’ve seen many ‘interesting’ fancy dress costumes in my time but the Giving Birth to Yourself Costume is definitely one of the most ‘interesting’! (possibly NSFW)
Sad Trombone
Following the on-hit wonder that was that we posted a couple of weeks ago, now comes Sad Trombone.
Photos from Tossers
Camera Tossers that is. A group of people who throw their cameras in the air whilst taking a photo. The results are often extremely colourful and pretty but also somewhat risky is you’re as cack-handed as I am.
Extended Album Art
A classic amongst classics of a b3ta challenge all about Extending Album Art. Some amazingly funny ideas in here.
Who’s been Where?
To help Al plan for his next holiday, I found this Google Maps mash-up of Doctor Who Locations. I’d have liked a bit more information about the locations like a screenshot showing it but you can’t have everything.
If you’re more of a Seinfeld fan (in which case please leave this site immediately) then you’ll be wanting this mashup which is done a bit better IMHO.
