The Simpsons New Title Sequence
To celebrate the Simpsons going HD, they’ve gone and got a brand new Title sequence. As an extra treat, here’s the first ever Simpsons episode (which was actually the last episode of the first series – read the info for the explanation).
Photographers – please read
If you’re in London on Feb 16th and own a camera then please go down to ”’New Scotland Yard”’ and take a photo to help protest against Section 76 which allows people to be imprisoned for up to 10 years for taking a photograph of a member of the armed forces (including police and firemen). More info here. All round good guy, comedian and activist Mark Thomas, holder of the Guinness Book of World Records title for ‘Most number of political demonstrations in one day’, will be there too which is always a bonus to see the master at work.
F*** My Life
Think your life is bad – a quick read of F*** My Life will hopefully cheer you up and make you feel less aloone. 40 words or less to describe why your life is F’d up.
Chairlift “Evident Utensil”
The video for Chairlift’s Evident Utensil is really clever indeed – making use of deliberate video artifacts to excellent effect.
Jujitsu for the ‘Weaker Sex’
I absolutely adore these old jujitsu self defence videos for the ‘weaker’ sex – they seem to be from around 1930 and the combination of the clothes and BBC English accent makes these doubleplusgood.
Rock Dad
It’s almost too painful to watch this Rock Dad sketch by Adam Buxton – anyone who knows me can probably easily imagine me in the car with my little gromlets (gromlings/gromlettes/grommits?) doing exactly this – and sad to say, I do this on a regular basis (just yesterday Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Bullet in the Head‘ popped up on the way to nursery).
The Toaster Project
Thomas Thwaites is an odd fellow, he’s decided to make his own toaster. Nothing too unusual there you may think – I certainly make plenty of more unusual things but he’s decided to make it from scratch. By ‘from scratch’ I mean from the raw materials like ore and oil. There’s a brief write-up here or check out the official Toaster Project blog. As he says, it’s a fairly ridiculous quest (which means we like it) and it does raise a lot of questions about disposable consumer appliances but I like his style and wish him well in his odd quest.
Erqqvg – Real-time Reddit
Erqqvg is a nice little tweak on Reddit that simply gives you a realtime view (updated about every 30 seconds). Hypnotic.
(Link goes to a mirror – the regular site is currently down).
High Five Escalator
The High Five Escalator is a really nice way to start the daily commute.
Kazoo Krazy
You know how to Kazoo don’t you? You just put your lips together and hum (with apologies to Lauren Bacall). I’m not sure that this is the approved way to play a kazoo. But then seeing what other people make of them it’s not the worst thing you could do with them. I thought the stealth Kazoo was pretty pointless but I can definitely see a use for the electric and midi kazoos which I believe are used by the Kazoo Funk Orchestra and are sold by Kazooka or kazoobie.
see what you started here Steve?
DisPepsia
I’ve seen advertisers/marketeers in action and it’s never a pretty sight but this brief explaining the Pepsi Gravitational Field in relation to the new Pepsi logo is jaw-dropping. n absolute must-read, it gets worse and worse the more you read (don’t worry, it’s mostly pictures – what did you expect from people with the reading age of 5). If the link goes down, there will be mirrors posted here.
This Is Why You’re Fat
It’s not hormones, you’re not big boned, This Is Why You’re Fat.
Spelling Bee
I proved that whilst my spelling is nigh on perfect, my typing needs some work on the Times Spelling Bee.
Loudness war – Latest Casualties
In the ongoing annoying idiocy that is the Loudness war I’m unhappy to announce two of the latest victims – I’ve heard advance copies of the Prodigy’s new album and Lily Allen’s and strewth! They’re both horribly compressed – yes they sound loud but utterly without depth – I’m getting very sick and tired of new albums (or remastered old ones) sounding this bad – ear fatigue at it’s worst. If you’re interested, both albums are ok – a 3.5 out of 5 – Lily’s lyrics are good but her voice is still no great shakes and The Prodigy are trying to relive past glories and not doing too bad a job about it – some tracks are almost there (Invaders Must Die) but it’s trying very hard.
A much, much better produced album I’ve just got is ”’Dan Auerbach””s ‘Keep it Hid’ – Here’s a Youtube preview to whet yer whistle.
Radiohead – 15 Steps @ the Grammys
I’ll try to find a better quality audio version of this performance if I can – Radiohead doing 15 Step at the Grammys last night with the USC Marching band – rather special I thought.
*Edit* Slightly better audio on this one but worse image and even better audio but no video here.
Block Street View
So, this truck stops outside an office every day. It completely blocks JF’s view, so he made a little adjustment to it. (small NSFW image).
Paris Catacombs
We’ve featured the ”’Catacombs of Paris”’ a few times before, but these new shots show some of the great recent graffiti.
cheers Kim
Cake Wrecks
Cake Wrecks – a blog for when professional cakes go wrong (although the current top post is pretty good!).
cheers Steve
Umbrella, ella, ella
Don’t let the rain get you down, you can either give it the finger, share it with a friend, go Stealthy, ninja-like or all a-glow. Just don’t get wet.
‘Creative’ Grooming
My eyes have not yet recovered from seeing these examples of Creative Grooming – the poor dogs!
Wierdest Amazon Page Ever
This has to be the wierdest Amazon I’ve certainly ever seen. Shatner in his pants, Paul Ross, Hitler, Norris, Slade, Nail clippers, Daryl Hall and mucus droplets – all available as prints for your home. Many excellent reviews which are very reminiscent of the b3ta crowd.
Behold the Crowdsurfing God
This guy knows how to crowdsurf.
ThinkGeek Product Update
Just noticed a few cool new things at Thinkgeek. The very odd coffee and tea filter drinking straws are just weird but I do drink a lot of loose tea and ground coffee. I’d also seriously consider the mini LED wind turbines for my garden (although I’d buy them direct from Mathmos to save on postage and import duty (import duty is the main reason I don’t buy much from Thinkgeek these days – I keep getting stung for large unexpected amounts). I was also tickled by the Rejected ThinkGeek Product # 187 and I think I already posted the blogger who visited the Thinkgeek offices and did an interview.
The Day The Saucers Came
Enjoy ”’Neil Gaiman”’ & Jouni Koponen The Day the Saucers Came – a superb example of ”’infinite canvas”’. More examples here.
Bubble Spinner
I’ve spent far too long playing this Bubble Spinner game now – the music is way too hypnotic and I think there’s something subliminal making me have ‘just one more go’.
Think You’re a Tough Guy?
I’ve got some friends who take part in Iron Man Chellenges and they’re a pretty tough bunch but I wonder if any of them would be up for the Tough Guy Challenge? Take a look at image 14 and decide for yourself if you could crawl under barbed wire, swim through muddy trenches and run over fire all in a mankini? Nutter.
Using the Hell out of your Digital Camera
It’s been a few months since I visited Cockeyed which is quite unlike me but I’m happy to point you all to Rob’s Using the Hell out of your Digital Camera page. A few useless/pointless tips but the first four or five are so simple and logical that everyone should do them. Having the first image on your camera as a locked image of your name and address should be on page one of every camera manual.
Mimo Mini Monitors
I really quite like the idea of these Mimo Monitors. They’re tiny 7″ portable monitors which are aimed as supplementary screens to run IM windows, email clients, docking photoshop toolbars, the ubiquitous Twitter etc and they connect using USB (not 100% sure how they do that – would like to know a bit more). I can see a lot of applications for these as long as there’s no huge power brick and the quality is good enough – I’d love to have a play with one.
