Blow It Out Yer Hole
Some amazing behaviour by dolphins blowing bubble rings – very cool and even more amazing that the rings don’t seem to float to the surface quite like normal bubbles – unless this is something to do with forces exerted on the bubbles by the dolphins then I can foresee some serious research on this phenomenon.
Stunning Fail
If you ever think of asking the police to investigate your computer because you think you other half has been looking at dodgy images, you might want to remove the videos of you and the dog being intimate before you hand it over. That doesn’t mean leaving them in the recycle bin!
Face Tweaking Your Friendds
Wire your friends up to an electric stimulus machine and sync to a bleepy dance track – hours of fun! I love it when they start laughing, especially the guy in the top right.
Dude Turns to Twitter As Guy Breaks In His House
If someone breaks into your house, most people’s first reaction is normally to call the police. I think Twittering about it and then setting up a webcam to stream it on the net is possibly a sign that modern life if pretty screwed up!
Google Street View hits UK streets
After what seemed to be a long wait, Google Street View hits UK streets. You can see my office quite nicely.
*Edit – anyone who knows where I live can go and see a nice snapshot of mrs grom and one of the gromlets in our garden!
What is This – Viral?
No details about this excellent video except that it seems to have been filmed in Holland, mentions quite a few brand names and mimics elements of Half Life. It’s got some fantastic effects – check out the birds right at the end. If anyone finds out more then please share.
Sound Bracelets
This guy makes some cool bracelets based on waveforms of your choice. You can also get an oddly identical product from this drugs awareness project and I sincerely hope they have permission to steal the idea.
Fembot Bjork
Look, the HRP-4C isn’t a fashion model robot they say it is, it’s a ”’fembot”’ ”’bjork”’.
James Randi Speaks: A Reflection
I could listen to ”’James Randi”’ speak all day and until an autobiography comes, short clips like Randi Speaks: A Reflection will have to do.
Mr Randi, as always, we salute you.
The Pope’s a Dick
As the title says, I think the pope is not only a dick but is close to being responsible for mass deaths as he rejects condoms for Africa. Despite ‘more than 60% of the world’s 40m people with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa and in South Africa alone, 600-1,000 people are thought to die every day because of Aids, the pope said “The traditional teaching of the church has proven to be the only failsafe way to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids.”
Dick.
Shuttle Launch Seen From Space
I’ll admit that I didn’t think the space shuttle program was still running but it seems from these beautiful images taken from the International Space Station that it is.
Hummingbird feeding from hand
Beautiful footage of a very brave ruby-throated hummingbird being fed by hand.
Mort the Sniper
Just got time to post a quick game to fill your lunchtime today – Mort the Sniper is simple, no instructions needed, just snipe the assigned targets.
cheers Mr Mort
6 GB of Free Music
The South by Southwest (”’SXSW””) music festival is one of the largest and most popular in the United States. For the fifth year in a row, SXSW has released a DRM-free, RIAA-safe collection of songs totaling 6 GB, which can all be downloaded for free, thanks to BitTorrent.
Are violent video games effectively preparing our children for the Post Apocalyptic future?
Studies have shown that our kids will understand how to lead elite squads of super-soldiers, but are these the skills they’ll really need?
‘Seeing’ Sound Waves
Quite a few of us involved in this site have shady pasts working on the fringes of the music industry and I’ve certainly worked my fair share of outdoor and stadium gigs. I was trying to explain the concept of how the speed of sound makes large outdoor concerts very hard to arrange speakers for. The deal is this, sound travels at approx 330m per second (or 1130 ft if you’re that way inclined) so if you’re 330metres away from the stage, you will hear the sound a whole second after the front row so the speakers are set with extremely precise delays to compensate. It can be a hard concept to explain but I’ve just come across a pretty decent visual representation in this Seeing Sound Waves blog post.
Torrent Droid
You’re out at the video store, supermarket or even a friend’s house and you see a dvd that you’d like to watch. Now you can use Torrent Droid on your Android phone to scan the barcode which will automatically fire up the Pirate Bay. grab the torrent file and start the movie downloading on your home pc so it is ready for watching when you get home. The obvious piracy issues aside, this is exactly what the future should be, it’s almost too easy!
I Want a Wine Cellar
I love the idea that this company will come to your house, dig a ho9le in the floor and install a very cool (literally) wine cellar. Please note, this won’t work if you live in an apartment.
The World’s Biggest Diamond Heist
”’Leonardo Notarbartolo”’ is released from prison this week. He’s finishing his sentence for his alleged part in the World’s Biggest Diamond Heist when $100m worth of diamonds were stolen from an ‘impenetrable’ safe two storeys underground. They were discovered by sheer luck after dropping some rubbish in the wrong place. It’s bound to form the basis of the plot of Ocean’s 14, 15 or whatever number we’re up to now.
Taking the Theremin to a new level
You can’t deny how much fun it looks using a Theremin with a CV Gate to control a guitar (or any other instrument). Of course we’ve featured the Theremax build-your-own ”’Theremin”’ before and this also has CV functionality, is cheaper and much more customisable, it just doesn’t have the very cool Moog badge.
God Hates Figs
It’s true, God Hates Figs.
Ban this Deadly Game
”’Tim Kretschmer”’, the German boy who went on a killing rampage this week, was well known as a gamer – I’m going to start a campaign to ban this deadly game if this is the violence that it leads to!
Daft Punk Keyboard
It’s a simple Daft Punk Soundboard so why have I spent at least 5 minutes recreating ”’Daft Punk”’ songs?
The Jenga Pistol
It might not actaully be in the spirit of ”’Jenga”’ but you can’t deny how cool the Jenga Pistol is – especially as you can clear complete rows of three. Watch the video to see how effective it actually is.
Mixwidget
Remember Mixwit? It was a pretty decent free online mixtape program which unfortunately suffered a premature death. the good news is that they’re talking about donating the code to Opentape, the other playlist program which we’ve used to put playlists on this site. Along with that, you can grab the mixwidget and do it yourself on your own site. The code is fully customisable too with full instructions.
Watchmen: Portraits From The Set
Beautiful B&W; shots taken on the set of Watchmen.
cheers Bear
Yosemite Extreme Panoramic Imaging Project
The Yosemite Extreme Panoramic Imaging Project is fairly self-explanatory – the aim is to create gigapixel panoramic images of Yosemite – the examples up so far are very pretty indeed – you can zoom from a whole mountain side right down to individual bushes. I know at least one of our readers will be interested in this one.
Kutiman mixes YouTube
Video mash-ups of the highest degree – making new tunes thru splicing YouTube videos together. Nice work.
Periodic Table of Typefaces
Another novelty Periodic Table
Drew Dots
”’Drew Barrymore””s mom, Jade, wanted to make sure that I destroyed all of the photos that she did not like from the shoot. So Drew and I sat there with a hole punch and punched out all the pictures that were not approved. Years later, I opened up the hole punch and found all of these circles of Drew and threw them in an envelope. Here they are.
If you have a Flickr account then check this shot out in all of it’s original glory. Bonus points for someone calling it ‘shopped in the comments!
