Hydepark Unityday
Apologies for the late notice but I clean forgot to post that tomorrow (Sat 1st August) is Leeds’ annual Hydepark Unityday festival. It’s completely free and if you’re in the area then please come along for 11 hours of excellent fun. You know it’s a good event when they don’t release the date of the festival until 2 weeks beforehand in order to limit the amount of people attending (if more than 10,000 people turn up then they have to shut down – they regularly get many more than that but I’ve yet to see them close it). Sorry to use such a cliche but there really is something for everyone.
On a related note, residents and ex-residents of the ‘hood that is LS6 will be sad to learn that Jean Crowther, who ran a flower shop at Hyde Park Corner for several decades, died a fortnight ago having finally lost her 20 yr battle with cancer. I can’t think of a better way of paying your respects than by attending Unity Day.
How to Avoid Ads in Gmail
Interesting (but not very practical way to avoid ads in gmail.
3D video like you’ve never seen before
When you think of 3d Video you’ll naturally imagine the cardboard glasses from the 50′s. A company called YellowBird have developed a system very similar to Google’s Street View system which uses video instead of still images. Check it out here.
Unknown Device
If you’ve ever suffered Windows saying it had ‘unknown devices’ in Device Manager then you’ll be grateful to know of this site detailing PCI Vendor and Device Lists – look up the codes, work out which device is causing the problems and then download the right driver to fix the issue. Nice.
Abandoned Tunnels & Vast Underground Spaces
More fantastic UrbEx, this time on a huge scale. Covering Russian nuclear submarine bases, Salt Mines, abandoned subways, and ridiculously mahoosive Japanese storm protection systems, there just aren’t enough photos but what there is, is stunning.
cheers Pricey
Livin’ Large with Basketbawful
Basketbawful is a basketball blogger called Matt McHale. Back in the 90′s he started attending an unnamed University in the US (ok, it was Purdue) where he was allocated a dorm room that he had to share with a man-mountain Dutch athlete who was on a sports scholarship. He’s written up some of the stories as a series called Livin’ Large and I thoroughly recommend reading the entire series.
I think once you work out who his roomie was and who the soon-to-be NBA star in the University you get a feel for how surreal it must have been and yet how similar for anyone who’s been forced into sharing a room for a year with a complete stranger (much like big grom who spent a year sharing with an odd fellow who later turned out to have a predilection for wearing clothes normally intended for the opposite sex).
I’ll post a link in the comments showing you who his roommate was but I’d suggest not looking until you’ve read at least half of the 15 instalments posted so far.
Punchlines To The 100 Most Offensive Jokes
I’ll leave it up to you to decide if, indeed, these are in fact the Punchlines To The 100 Most Offensive Jokes of All-Time. Since it doesn’t start with the word ‘Aristocrats‘ then I think it fails as a list.
CSS Is Awesome
More nerd humour , if you get the CSS is awesome mug then you’ll realise how funny it is.
cheers again Dan
Animal Pharm
The Moo Tang Clan, Missy Elephant, Piggie Smalls and De La Mole are all part of Patrick Moberg’s Animal Pharm series of illustrations.
cheers Dan
Breakfast on the darkside
Don’t leave your x-wing without one.
Birdy Nam Nam
I’ve got some older stuff by ”’Birdy Nam Nam”’ but I’m quite taken by the video for their tune The Parachute Ending taken from the recent ”’Manual for successful rioting”’ album.
In a similar vein, have Shatner on the Mount by Fall on your Sword.
Kemp Folds
Kemp Folds is not the name of a town or a road, it’s not a story about a man playing poker either. What it does happen to be is the best one-track single purpose blog we’ve yet featured. It’s raison d’etre is purely to post folded newspaper cuttings of UK soap actor & wanna-be hard man ”’Ross Kemp”’. This site is pure genius.
Awful Library Books
I’m currently addicted to the Awful Library Books blog – who can deny the awesomeness of Crafts for the Retarded?
8 Miles Wide
I have no idea who ”’Storm Large”’ is but according to this music video, her v4gina is 8 miles wide – the video gets better the whole way through and there’s a cracking tribute to ”’The Pixies”’ at the end.
Chocolate Starfish
The Incredible Edible Anus is a pretty niche market for a chocolate company.
Beauty and the Deep
Turn up your speakers or stick your headphones on, click on this link of a video of Kuroshio Sea, the 2nd largest aquarium tank in the world and make it fullscreen then spend 5 mins in bliss. Truly mesmerising.
Wall-E Case Mod
The workmanship on this Wall-E Case Mod is superb as are the build photos.
Red Remover
Red Remover a very good waste of a lunchtime game.
Augmented Reality Business Card
This augmented reality lark is catching on and whilst I’m sure that we’ll look back at novelties like Jonas Jager’s Augmented Businesscard in the future, you’ve got to admit that it’s a very nice mashup between the analogue nature of a business card and the digital world. I like the way you can call him directly from it and browse his portfolio by moving it about. The bonus is that it’s still a nice card even if you don’t have a webcam – wonder if you could get it to work with an (i)phone camera – guess so.
The Moon on a Stick
Especially for Solomon who complains that I always ask him for the moon on a stick.
YouTube 3D
Youtube has entered the 1950′s with their YouTube 3D. You can tag videos with ‘yt3d:enable=true’ to enable an experimental 3D mode. If you’ve got some glasses handy then grab them and head here. I was disappointed that neither ”’Creature from the Black Lagoon”’ nor ”’House of Wax”’ are in the listings yet.
This Resident Evil T-Shirt
Resident Evil T-Shirt is full of win (apart from the bit about having to expose my ever-expanding belly to get the full effect.
Another Brick in the Wall-E
Lots of people already know about the infamous Dark Side of the Rainbow debate – does ”’Pink Flyod””s ”’Dark Side of the Moon”’ sync up with ”’The Wizard of Oz”’ and was it deliberate? (‘Kind of’ and ‘No’ IMHO). I’m actually more impressed with the Another Brick in the Wall-E syncing up of ”’Wall-E”’ and Floyd’s ”’The Wall”’. They’re both good movies and I don’t really need an excuse to play either of them again – the only problem is that listening to the Wall soundtrack will just make me want to watch the movie again.l
Morningstar
I used to have to save up for months when I was a kid to play games very similar to Morningstar on my ”’Amiga”’ and I still can’t get over the fact that I can now just log onto the interwebs and play them for free – this one is like being in a sci-fi movie (including the terrible voice-acting).
Vinyl Data
Kids today – they just don’t know how lucky they are. Back when I was young we didn’t have computers at home, until the ”’ZX81”’ came along and forget about your blu-ray, dvds, cds or memory sticks, we had vinyl and cassettes but not many people will remember how a few bizarre individuals tried to put data onto records. Vinyl Data wasn’t exactly a success but I do remember trying some of these (I had the Thompson Twins one (and coincidentally used to live down the street from Chris Sievey/Frank Sidebottom mentioned here too)
Ping Pong Door
The Ping Pong Door is a real design win of an idea – not sure about the practicalities but I’d love one.
When Driving Becomes Writing
If you ask me they should have named it the ”’Top Gear”’ font, not the iQ Font – watch how it was created but taking overhead motion capture of a car skidding about in a warehouse to form the letters.
Remembering Apollo 11
I think this picture set Remembering Apollo 11 is probably the most definitive set of images I’ve seen from Man’s first steps on the moon and any of you ridiculous doubters who still think it’s a hoax should watch the Mythbusters special on the landing. Not that it will change your minds but it’s a good watch anyway.
Johnny Cash’s Thunderball Bond Theme
Johnny Cash was one of many musicians who have been asked to contribute a theme tune to a James Bond film but despite being a collector of his music, I’d somehow never heard it before so here’s Thunderball by Johnny Cash.
How Much is this Meeting Costing?
I knew there’s be something like this on the web. Use the Meeting Ticker to work out how much those pointless meetings you need to attend are costing.
