Someone Once Told Me
Someone Once Told Me is an ongoing photography project by Mario Cacciottolo with a very simple premise – a new photo every day of someone holding up a handwritten sign with something that someone once told that person. Reminds me a bit of this famous video.
Kill or cure? The Daily Mail on Cancer
I’m pleased someone has finally made a site like Kill or cure? which lists the outrageous claims regularly printed by the dreadful UK newspaper the Daily Mail. Every day they have a headline saying that object A has been proven to cure cancer whilst object B has been proven to give you cancer. The type of cancer is rarely specified and the research that ‘proves’ it is never any such thing, it’s either a press release/advertising or a misquote/out of context quote from scientific papers – see ”’Ben Goldacre””s excellent Bad Science site for more details. Oh and if you’re Polish, gay or anything that isn’t white middle class British Caucasian then don’t forget to wear your t-shirt with pride.
Crappy Taxidermy
The blog dedicated to Crappy Taxidermy is most definitely not a thing of beauty. I defy you not to think WTF?!?!
Splitter 2
We posted the original Splitter game a few months ago and it’s been improved with Splitter 2. Enjoy.
Vortex Smoke Ring Collisions
I want to see more! This way too short video of a Vortex Smoke Ring Collision is beautiful and proves that bored scientists create their best work when left in a lab alone.
Most Popular Passwords Quiz
I got a decent 10 out of 20 on the name the most used passwords of all time quiz. I’d have probably got another 2 or 3 given a little longer but no way I’d have guessed the rest even with my l33t skillz.
Henry Rollins featuring The Techno Viking
Superb mash-up of Henry Rollins featuring The Techno Viking (Steve Porter remix) (if you haven’t seen the original TechnoViking then go watch that too – it’s hilarious.
Top 10 comic book cities
I went to the British Architecture Journal’s list of the Top 10 comic book cities prepared to be scathing about an article that just banged on about ”’Gotham City”’ and the usual suspects. I was very wrong. They included, albeit at number 10, my favourite ever graphic novel city Radiant City (yes I do have such a thing, if you ever read Mister X then you’ll understand why). Also included at number one is ”’Mega City One”’ but alas, no Palnu from Cerebus.
Compilation Of World’s Abandoned Places
The problem with this Compilation Of the World’s Abandoned Places is that, whilst there are enough photographs to whet your appetite, there aren’t enough to satiate you. Some fascinating cities and places here.
Mac Repair and Data Security with Ice-T
”’Ice-T”’ shows you how to repair your Mac and ensure that your data is secure. (Not an approved method).
Roadrunner Finally Wins
Joe Gibbs, a ”’NASCAR”’ driver was testing his car recently when he got in the way of the decades old battle between Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. (picture of what remained is pretty groo so be careful).
Engrish Automated Parking Advert
This would be quite a cool video showing how subterranean Automated Parking Systems work but it’s raised to a whole new level by the ”’Engrish”’ voiceover – hilarious.
cheers Pricey
If You Open Your Mind Too Much…Your Brain Will Fall Out
Following on from yesterday’s Homeopathetic links, here’s Tim Minchin’s succinct take on it.
Magnetic Nail Polish
I?m not sure how wise having magnetic fingers is in these days of handheld technology but I suspect there’s not enough strength in Lancome’s Le Magnetique Nail Polish to make any difference. Nice idea though and looks somewhat better than Evil Mad Scientist’s version.
Crush The Castle
Speaking of little online web games, Crush the Castle is another favourite that I don’t think I’ve posted before – use a ”’trebuchet”’ to knock down the castles and kill your enemies.
(in case anyone’s wondering why so many posts today – I’ve been away for a few days and I’m catching up)
Multiplayer Jelly Battle
Ooh, Jelly Battle is an excellent little webgame which you can play on your own or against other people on the web. There are no instructions but it takes all of 30 seconds to work it out and it’s extremely addictive (and cute).
Upside-Down-Ternet
Pesky neighbours nicking your wifi? Make them use the Upside-Down-Ternet instead.
The Gwigle Game
The Gwigle Game is meant to be a way of learning how to use Google better, you just have to guess what was being searched for.
Deaf Gaming
Very interesting series of 3 videos on youtube featuring ”’Gabe Newell”’ from ”’Valve Corporation”’ doing a focus group with a room full of deaf people. Apart from making you think from a different viewpoint, Gabe has some interesting thoughts on what makes a good person to have in a game development team (he thinks generic all-rounders are better than specialists in a particular area – the opposite to the traditional entertainment industry where you spend a life time animating cat’s lips because that’s what you get known for). Here’s part 2 and part 3. This reminds me of a conversation I had recently when I wondered if there was a good way of using a pc or a Wii etc to learn sign language and make it a game, since sign language is much more fluent than closed captioning/typing. I’d love to have a job working on that kind of system.
Sandimation
I think we’ve posted this girl’s work beforeor maybe it was someone doing something similar but I do like this style of live Sand Animation.
cheers Steve
HTML5 Canvas and Audio Experiment
If you need any reason to xonsider updating your browser to the latest version (ie: one which supports ”’HTML5”’) then look no further than thisHTML5 Canvas and Audio Experiment. It may look like nothing special but there is no Flash involved, it’s all rendered in your browser using a small piece of javascript called processign.js. You can see other examples of HTML5 in use here.
thanks Dan
Simon’s Cat
If you like cats then you’ll love Simon’s Cat and if you hate cats then it’ll confirm everything you already think about them. If you really like cats or find the internet too scary then you can grab the b3ta Kittenify bookmark which replaces every image on any webpage with a picture of a kitten.
thanks for the first link Kim
The Multicolored Multitask
Total nerdgasm! Quite amazing to watch this kid doing a Multicolored Multitask by solving two ”’Rubik’s Cube””s with one hand whilst playing ”’Guitar Hero”’ with his other hand (and strumming with his elbow). I like the way he watches the tv in the mirror too so he’s watching a reverse image. There’s a quick interview with him here.
Homeopathy and Nutritionists
In honour of an acquaintance of mine who recently spent £50 on a pile of homeopathic ‘remedies’ I’ll repost the classic Homeopathic A&E; sketch, the Nutrionists sketch both from ”’Mitchell and Webb”’ and ”’Dara O’Briain””s stand-up routine on the same subject. Better than any argument I could make.
The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon
This video does go on and on but for once, that’s actually part of the joke, the sheer amount of effort involved in filming this spoof trailer for a horror movie featuring a stupendously slow, relentless murderer with the extremely inefficient weapon is incredible. I think the only thing that could make it better would be a ”’spork”’. I kept expecting to see Uri Geller pop up any moment. Worth watching the whole way through.
*Edit* Found out a little more about this and it was made by a guy called Richard Gale, he won 18 awards for that one and has a new one called ‘Criticized’ which you can see the (very scary) trailer for on it’s homepage.
Leave Sonic Alone
I think this comic accurately shows why I loved ”’Sonic the Hedgehog”’ way back in the MegaDrive days but hated it ever since.

Most Awesome/Useless Game Add-on
You don’t have to watch the whole of the Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition Unboxing video, just skip forward to about 3 mins in and see what you get with the Prestige edition – Night Vision Goggles! I thought it was quite ridiculous but then again these goggles normally cost well over £250 and the game only (!) costs £149 so if you’re in the market for some goggles then this might not be a bad idea although I reckon all the chavs will nick these from their local HMV store and use them to whilst roaming around the estate at night.
cheers Bear
Oh Beehive!
Omlet, the very clever designer dudes behind the Eglu chicken house for the garden, have a great new idea – the Beehaus to help you look after your own hive. Bearing in mind that hives have changed very little over the years, this is quite a step forward (assuming bees like them).
