UK Post Code Database

I know I’ve been very busy for the past few weeks but how did I miss seeing that the UK government database of all 1,841,177 post codes had been leaked? This is incredibly useful, non-personal information that is effectively paid for by the UK tax payers but is not available to them. Certainly the Guardian has been calling for this to be released for a long time.

Tomorrow’s World

Nice to see that the BBC have started a special mini-site dedicated to the classic and much missed series Tomorrow’s World. So far uploaded footage only seem to go as far as 1994 (with ”’Trevor Bayliss”” clockwork radio) so my small contributions aren’t there and I don’t know if my rather eccentric uncle’s 3 appearances will make a return either but you can see such highlights as the first mobile phone call, touch screen computers from 1982 and ”’Christiaan Barnard”’ discussing heart transplants in 1968.

We Are Not Protesting

I wish I had the tenacity of the guys who liberated Canary Wharf. This is one of the best protests I’ve seen before – “We are not protesting, we’re just talking through megaphones”. Very funny, and worthy of the great ”’Mark Thomas”’. It’s always nice to see the private security guards being pulled up for imitating the police.

My New Addiction

As a complete opposite to the Rammstein videos I posted yesterday I thought I’d share a cover version I just can’t stop from giving me a constant earworm – Pomplamoose – Single Ladies. An amazingly cute video.

Charlie Brooker Nails It Again

Eric Idle Responds to Your Fatuous Comments

Youtube comments are a farce – that’s well known but whilst I merely ignore them completely, ”’Eric Idle”’ takes a different view and has Responded to Your Fatuous Comments in style.

Rammstein Take it Further Than Usual

Many of our readers will be familiar with ”’Rammstein”’, we’ve featured them often enough and they’re well known for over the top, outlandish or just funny videos. Their new one goes, as usual, just that little bit further – it’s called Pussy and has it’s tongue firmly in it’s cheek but still goes that bit too far. It was directed by Jonas Akerlund who also did the Mann Gegen Mann video which should give you a clue how NSFW it is. Seriously, Don’t ever try to watch a Rammstein video at work!

We’ve previously featured the breathtaking animations of Blu and I’m glad to say he’s back with COMBO a collaborative animation with David Ellis. This one’s a doozy – my daughter has just watched this through 4 times in a row mesmerised.

The Prisoner Remake

Internally I’m screaming that the remake of The Prisoner is just plain wrong and yet the clips of ”’Ian McKellen”’ as Number 2 do make me want to give it a chance. I do think it would have been an ideal vehicle for ”’J J Abrams”’ to film.

“I feel” warmer towards Twitter with more apps like this doing something interesting with data in their network.

Lose/Lose

The old War Games maxim, ‘The only winning move is not to play’ doesn’t stand as strictly true for Lose/Lose, the computer game that destroys your files. Seriously – it’s like Space Invaders but ever alien you kill, deletes a file from your pc. If you get killed then the game itself is wiped. If you destroy all of the aliens, you win, assuming that your computer is still running having had a number of random files removed. I think this is one psychological game I won’t be taking part in.

Live classical cello / motion capture mashup

There is going to be a totally awesome live stream from King’s Court, London, this week involving a live classical/jazz cellist, ”’Matthew Barley”’. He’s going to be performing several pieces of music whilst being motion-captured and a VJ is going to be creating some great sounding imagery in a (probably) never been done before manner. There appears to be one on Wednesday and then three on Saturday evening running pretty much consecutively. Be there or be a philistine!

Lip sync? No Thanks

I love it when bands refuse to play along with the fake lip syncing on tv shows. Here’s Muse doing Uprising on Italian tv last week (funny interview afterwards). There’s a long history of UK bands doing this, from Syd Barrett not appearing to sing at this recording through Public Image Limited and Iron Maiden to Pop Will Eat Itself and The Smiths. Even American bands are not immune as this classic Nirvana Top of the Pops appearance and Queens of the Stone Age (use bugmenot to login if you have problems) demonstrate.

Happy Birthday to the Best Game Ever

Has it really been that long? Am I really that old? Oh well, that’s besides the point. I hope you will all wish Elite a very happy 25th birthday.
That game, contained in only 22Kb, is what sparked my interest in computing on my old ”’BBC Micro”’.
*Edit* Damn Carloz – that’s the 2nd time in a week that you’ve beaten me to a post!
