Jumpin’ Jazari

Patrick Flanagan seems to be a bit of a polymath. Not only is he a good musician but he’s devised a method of connecting instruments up to solenoids to play them which is then wired to an ”’arduino”’ unit which he controls with a pair of Nintendo Wiimotes. Have a look at Jazari in action and then check out How It Works. He’s got skillz.

I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue

ted has confirmed his place as one of my favourite people ever by pointing out that the Internet Archive now has stacks and stacks of old episodes of the best radio show ever (apart from possibly the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy), ”’I'm Sorry I haven’t a clue”’ available here, here and here – all free and legit. ”’Mornington Crescent”’ anyone?

Robot Unicorn Attack

I’ll be perfectly honest, it’s the name of the Robot Unicorn Attack game that sold me but the music is just as awesome.

Recognise This?

Have a listen to Pierre Henry’s Psyché Rock from 1967 – recognise it? You should, it’s the song that was reworked as the Futurama theme. For you music nerds, it’s a perfect example of the ”’Musique concrète”’ genre.

Timmy O’Riley

This is how you do viral marketing well – Thinkgeek have uploaded Timmy O’Riley by L. Hadron and the Colliders as a cover of The Who’s Baba O’Riley played using only things that they sell. It sounds awful but that’s not the point.

Waxed works

Louis Tussaud’s House of Wax in Great Yarmouth, reputed to be the worst Museum in the world is up for sale. Some of the collection of 150 wax non-look-a-likes are being auctioned with the promise of disembodied heads going for as little as £50 – £80.

Universal Network Cable

These days I’m more of a hands-off geek but I would have killed (quite literally at times) for one of these Universal Network Cable back in the day.

ShadyURL

My warped sense of humour definitely approves of ShadyURL. It’s like every other URL shortening service but the twist is that it makes the new URLs seem dodgy or suspicious. Both evil and fun but I think it needs a reverse option where you can put in a goatse-like url and get a My Little Pony equivalent back.

Retro Encabulator

We’ve just bought one of these Retro Encabulators at work but the idiots bought version 1.3 not 5.3.21.7 so it won’t synergise to our confabulators properly.

Virtual Backlot

This showreel for an effects house demonstrates some brilliant green-screening to make Virtual Backlots – I’ve seen a few of these shows and never realised at all (although the ship on fire looks worse IMHO). That’s some heavy duty compositing.

Please Rob Me

Please Rob Me is both evil and valid. It tracks twitter feeds for phrases such as “left home” and “check in” and re-tweets them on a handy page so that you can use those handy geo-location features of your gps-enabled device like your phone to show where you just left or put more basically it shows how dangerous it is to tell the world that you’re not in.

Mathematical pron

The combination of fractals and hippy trance is a pretty scary proposition, but this HD zoom to the power of e.214 into the Mandelbrot set will properly bend your brain.

If you don’t know what level of zoom e.214 is then a magnification of e.12 would increase the size of a particle to the same as the earths orbit! e.21 would make a particle look the same size as the milky way and e.42 would be equal to the universe. I only watched 2 minutes of this and the office walls are still melting around me.
