It’s the Future

We’re working (albeit very slowly indeed) on the redesign for this blog (although we’re still stuck on how to export the 10,000 or so posts from the archives!) but if you want a sneak preview of the new site check out the new, ultra modern, sleek gromblog of the future (no, not really).

Star Wars Vs. Star Trek

The only flaw in this brilliant Star Wars Vs. Star Trek mash-up is that I was expecting a metallic crunching sound at the end when the tractor beam pulls the Enterprise in. Other than that, very funny indeed.

Damn you Google

I’ve been too damn busy recently to do anything at all about moving my blog to wordpress before May 1st when Google will stop supporting the way this blog is published. Carloz has been doing some marvellous tinkering in the background to move the whole thing over to wordpress but I know he needs more time and a hell of a lot more help from me. this is just a pre-warning that things might be a bit erratic at the end of the month until we get all 10,000 odd posts transferred over whilst retaining the old URLS and ensure that we still have a working RSS feed. I suspect that we’ll have to just get something working to start with and tinker with the look/feel afterwards. Please bear with us and please return on a regular basis for updates – as I said before, if you’re an RSS reader then you ‘might’ see the old feed stop being updated (not sure on anything yet!).

Not Quite What Gibson Intended

One of my favourite books is the cyberpunk classic (and arguably the first cyberpunk novel) ”’Neuromancer”’ by ”’William Gibson”’. It has a famous first line
The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.‘. Flickr user ivorjawa amusingly points out the anachronism – damn digital tv!

Soundgarden Reunion Bootleg & Review

I certainly couldn’t make it to Seattle last week for the ”’Soundgarden”’ reunion and nor could Kim, our regular American correspondent, but she was kind enough to rub that fact home by pointing me to a review of the gig but then made up for it with a bootleg of the entire gig. I really like the site this was posted on – just watching a video of Eddie Veder covering ”’The Who””s Baba O’Riley.

Ted Talking Randi

Two of my favourite things are ”’James Randi”’ and the ”’TED Talks”’ series of lectures. Guess what? Yep, they finally got Mr Randi to give a TED Talk. This makes me very happy indeed.

Mark Thomas Paid by Police!

Ok, so it’s not exactly that comedian/activist/superhero ”’Mark Thomas”’ is employed by the police, it’s actually better than that – he’s won a £1,200 payout for being unfairly stopped and searched for having an ‘over-confident attitude’ (what does that remind you of I wonder?). As ever he does the right thing – some money is going to charity and the rest will go towards costs of his next tour which he says will be advertised with posters thanking the police for their financial support.

Ableton Sound Design

Posted more as a bookmark for myself really. Tom Cosm is uploading a series of video tutorials on Ableton Sound Design and they’re really rather good.

5Axis CNC Machining

I’m in total awe of this beautiful 5Axis CNC Milling Machine. I’ve used many ‘normal’ ones but these are things of beauty. I think I did a little geek wee.

A Right Old Cook-Up

When proof-reading a new cookery book try to pay attention and don’t let your own feelings on racism slip out.

I thought I’d posted the link of ”’Bill Murray”’ YBartending at SXSW already but if I didn’t then have a follow-up of Bill Murray super-roadie and police abater.

Buemi’s wheels shear off in F1 crash

To lose one tyre is unlucky but to lose both front tyres at the same time as Sebastien Buemi has just done is just highly bizarre.

The Train That Never Stops

Very intriguing idea from China – trains waste a lot of time slowing down for stations and waiting for passengers to embark/disembark so why not make a train thatnever stops at a station?

Death row inmate claims allergy to lethal injection

Back after a short break – apologies for the lack of posts. Normal programming will now continue.
As much as I detest the idea of capital punishment, I did snigger a little on hearing of the absurdity of the death row inmate who is claiming to have an allergy to the lethal injection.
