Making Virals Pay
I guess technically I should refer to the ‘David after Dentist’ video as a meme and not a viral since it wasn’t advertising and viral now seems to relate to marketing ploys. Anyway, now that the storm has died down, it seems that David’s family made $150,000 off the back of the video. I hope they banked most of it for David when he gets old enough.
The curse of Nike
With the six stars of the “Write the Future” advert for the World Cup now at home watching the event on TV, talk is obviously turning to the question of whether the campaign was cursed? Muh ha ha hah
Harryhausen – Cooler to the nth degree
Hot on the heels of our previous post comes the news the Ray Harryhausen has donated his life’s works to the National Media Museum (aka Film and Television museum) in Bradford, just up the road from me. I’m gonna be an even more regular visitor now!
cheers Imran
Happy Birthday Ray Harryhausen
Regular readers will know of our love and respect for the work of stop-motion genius Ray Harryhausen and it’s with great delight that we wish him a very happy 90th birthday.
Unfortunate URLs
Take two simple, seemingly innocuous words, run them together to make a web address and you get something a little more scary. Ah! The nuances of language! Enjoy…

Les peluches gores de Patricia Waller
I do like the combination of plush toys and gore – is that soo wrong? .
Homeopathy – Again.
Homeopathy. It really is bollocks. Seriously. Stop thinking it’s harmless. I can’t believe how many times I have to have this discussion with sensible, reasonable people who seem to lose all sense because ‘it helped a friend’.
Tristan Perich 1 bit symphony
Tristan Perich assembles simple 1bit electronics inside CD cases.
They look and sound amazing.

Nicky Campbell C-Bombing Breakfast
The animation makes this the best clit of Nicky Campbell’s now infamous c-bombing on the radio.
NSFW
(and yes, the typo is a poor attempt at humour)

Orbital – Doctor Who
Far too many highlights from Glastonbury this year – but here’s one – Matt Smith (aka Doctor Who) accompanied by Orbital
It’s an AT-AT’s Life

Another Friday mix
In the absence of anything amusing happening on the web today, here’s another tasty mix freshly uploaded from MandrewB. It’s on an dubbed out minimal tip with a very tasteful side serving of tripped out eastern vibes – perfect for a lunchtime beer and 45 minutes chilling out in the sun. (damn I should work for NME)
Wagon christ solid steel mix
Thank Wagon Christ it’s Friday! Here’s the amazing Luke Vibert Solid Steel mix that couldn’t be released because of legal issues for the low price of FREE! Thanks Ninja!

Getting the most out of Gmail
Here’s a good article for Getting the most out of Gmail. Nothing new to me but having spoken to colleagues a lot of these were news to them so probably worth posting – especially if you haven’t come across the blahblah+inserttaghere@gmail.com trick before.
Launchpad – The Ableton Live controller
I’m very tempted with the Novation Launchpad – – an Ableton Live controller which is usb powered and cheap-ish (£149). I’m even more tempted after watching this from a bloke called Fingadrummer
Novation have already been in contact with him…
Put A Donk On It
There’s no denying that this is a truly appalling song but, seriously, check out the sign-language signer – she’s amazing. Whatever she got paid, it wasn’t enough!
Accidental inhalation
Careful what and how you snort.
I’m Not in Love With a Girl on the Manchester Virgin Megastore Checkout Desk Anymore
It’s a sad day for music industry and for Timperley. I’m very unhappy to tell our readers that Chris Sievey has died at the age of 54. Chris was best known as Frank Sidebottom, the papier mache be-headed comedian and musician who put Timperley on the map.
Originally finding fame as lead singer of the punk band The Freshies who had a hit with one of the longest song titles to make the charts (despite being forced to change it slightly)
Chris was the ultimate self-starter, pre-dating punk by forming his own record label, Razz, in 1974 and releasing the world’s first multimedia single when he released The Biz as a single and a Sinclair Spectrum game on tape
How could anyone not like a man who had the knack of releasing singles with titles such as ‘I Can’t Get “Bouncing Babies” by the Teardrop Explodes’ with a chrous of ‘Boing boing, bouncing babies’
He was a friend of the stars too
I met Chris numerous times around the time of the ‘Oh Blimey Big Band’ and he was a sweet, gentle guy who seemed to transform when he put on his alter ego’s oversized head. He was certainly unique and I, personally, will miss him a lot.
Best Way to Watch a Space Shuttle Launch
You can’t get a much more unique way of watching a Space Shuttle launch than these skydivers.
The Wheel of Chandhok
Not some fantasy novel, ancient artefact or Nintendo game but the steering wheel of Formula One’s Karun Chandhok – some features I didn’t know about before like the 10x, 1x, Acknowledge buttons and the Safety Car Acknowledge button. Also slightly worried about the track map in the middle – you’d have hoped that he’d know the course by the time they start the race!
The Amputee Rap
Josh Sundquist is an amputee and a motivational speaker – wait, keep reading, he’s actually pretty funny as you can see from his Amputee Rap
Rent a White Guy
I’d heard rumours of the Rent a White Guy scheme in Japan many years ago and it seems to have spread over to China now. I’m amazed that the converse isn’t happening over here yet – you’d have thought companies wanting manufacturing output would want the speed, cheap-pricing and flexibility of the Chinese would be suckered by some bloke in a shed in Wigan.
We are good.
This is always nice to see. Always makes me feel good to find little bits of recognition on the web, this one from TYWKIWDBI. That ‘Airplane’ post, which was one of the first ones after our hiatus seems to have been picked up by a sizeable chunk of the blogosphere. It makes our return all the more worthwhile.
