The Wilderness Downtown
The Wilderness Downtown is an interactive film created by Chris Milk in association with Google and Arcade Fire. It’s an html5 experiment and works best with Chrome browser but works ok in other HTML5 compliant browsers. About a minute into it I became very impressed indeed when I realised it was my town’s google street view being used.
Dirpy
I’ll be looking more closely at Dirpy when I have more time next week. It looks like a site well worth bookmarking (along with old favourite Media-Convert)but Dirpy specialises in tinkering with digital video, the example they give is give it a youtube url and it’ll give you an mp3 of the audio. Could be handy.
New Grow Game out
Remember those excellent ‘Grow’ games? There’s a new one out, this time called Grow Valley.
It has come to our attention…
“Please note, within the next few weeks, we will be switching to our new home on the Web.
In other news, it has come to our attention that the domain name “FerrethAndJobs.com” may be misread by some.”
(Screenshotted here in case in goes down)
I am the client
Terrifyingly accurate portrayal of the sort of missguided sense of reality that often ends up guiding people who commission work from the creative industries. Reminds me of Kill your friends by John Niven which is a must read for anyone who’s had the misfortune to have any dealings with a record company.
A moron in a hurry
I hadn’t realised until today that the phrase A moron in a hurry actually had a legal basis. You live and learn.
Go Rubinho!
When he starts this weekend’s Formula 1 Grand Prix, all-round nice guy and only man faster than The Stig, Rubens ‘Rubinho’ Barrichello will be starting his record breaking 300th GP. That means he’s driven in almost a third of the World Championship races that have ever been held!!!
The pros and cons of home working
Having been stuck at home for the past three weeks with a very broken leg I do believe that working from home will eventually drive anyone crazy. And even though offices are generally godforsaken places I think I’d still prefer working in one rather than working from home.
Flame On!
No Pyromaniac musician should be without his very own Flamethrowing trombone
mind you, it’s probably safer than this guy’s pyro device – I’d go to scratch my eye and end up in hospital if I built one.
N.B. I finally finished making my own Useless Machine with the much needed aid from Big Si – photos and video coming soon…
Scott Pilgrim Vs The Matrix
I’m still suffering ridiculous levels of expectation for Edgar Wright’s latest opus Scott Pilgrim vs The World but even those of you who are less excited might well be amused by the following mash-up.
Rough Night
Apologies, forgot to mention I was going away for a while but back now. To kick off again, here’s a pretty accurate depiction of the kind of rough night we all have once in a while. It’s by Vincent Giard and I really rather like his work.
Grey fluffy clouds
Here’s a classic Monday morning remix for you. Grey Fluffy clouds, the Watford remix of the classic Orb track.
Free tracks from Sub Pop
Those good folk at Sub Pop are giving away a bunch of tracks from the likes of Nirvana, Flight of the Conchords, Iron & Wine, The Shins, Blitzen Trapper, Band of Horses, Avi Buffalo and many more.
Tucker And Dale VS Evil
I can’t wait for Tucker and Dale VS Evil to come out next year. It’s a kind-of spoof of your archetypal kids camping in the forest get killed by evil rednecks movie from the poor, misunderstood, innocent rednecks point of view and from the trailer it looks brilliant.
The IT Crowd Unaired US Pilot
Why? Just why? Keeping Moss but losing everyone else and replacing them with identical people is just … AAARRGGHH!
(Here’s an old post by Graham Linehan, the writer/creator, on the US version. I should point out that this pilot is from 2007 and wasn’t picked up mostly due to network issues in the US and apparently they’re working on a new, different US version at the moment.
For another even more shocking demonstration in how to ruin comedy with bas casting and simply atrocious comic timing, here’s the 2008 German version (Guys with Mice)
Don’t Get Hit with the Ugly Schtick
Dating sites don’t rank highly on the most-visited lists here at Prime Towers but I do like what OKCupid do. They’re data-mining whores and we’ve previously brought you their post on the myths of profile pictures but now they’ve done a post to appeal to the camera nerd with their and Don’t Be Ugly By Accident! analysis.
Quit in Style
This girl, if it’s true, certainly knows how to quit in style. (but what’s with the HOPA/HPOA misspelling?)
It’s Easy to Laugh at the Drunk but…
It is very easy to laugh at drunk people but that doesn’t mean it’s right…
oh screw it, yes it is – here’s how not to pitch a tent at a festival
The Pixies have it right
First off, let me say very clearly I’ve long admired Pearl Jam’s anti-Ticketmaster stance – they have a monopoly that’s bad for music and theatre fans and they charge unreasonable costs (IMHO if any libel lawyers are reading) but one band have found a great way of selling tickets to gigs – check out how Pixies are doing it right using simple technology and engaging directly with their fans. The icing on the cake is the mp3s of the gig being sent afterwards. Brilliant!
The definitive Beastie Boys sample source collection
Pretty much the motherlode of sample-nirvana, miscreant productions have produced a labour of love that is pretty much every source song that the Beastie Boys have ever sampled with their definitive Beastie Boys sample source collection. Grab the uploads quickly as I suspect they might not last too much longer. The source tracks themselves are wide ranging in genre but it’s a who’s who of quality musicians. they’ve done a few other albums and artists such as Portishead, Cypress Hill and Public Enemy – check the blog out here
How to copy a record
Unlike your CD collection, which may have already started disintegrating if you were an early adopter, you don’t really need to back up your vinyl records. However if you should want too….
Twitch
Geeky set of Chrome games that appear in natty little windows and simply require mouseclicks to play.
Controversial album art
This Wikipedia page contains a list of notable albums with controversial album art, from which the controversy resulted in the album being banned, censored or sold in packaging other than the original one.
Achievement Unlocked 2
I’ve been stuck on a very dull telephone conference call this morning but that’s not been a problem as I’m 76.40% way through Achievement Unlocked 2. If you remember the first one, you basically have to get all of the achievements with your elephant. One of the most pointless but addictive games on the net.
Oh god, I’ve just noticed this one has multiplayer!
*Edit* AAAARGH! Stupid, stupid, stupid grom! I posted this in the wrong window and lost my game meaning I have to start again!
Pleased to Meet You
Hi, pleased to meet you, please accept this gift. And so it begins…
Deadly Puzzles
GarE Maxton makes metal puzzles of the sort with which I’m rather obsessed and perusing his site to see if there were any I could afford (I couldn’t) I found his latest piece – The Intimidator.
It turns into a gun. A real gun. That shoots. you know, bullets.
Celestial Soul Portraits
Seeing that people can make money from utter tripe like these Celestial Soul Portraits I’m thinking of jacking in my job, finding a copy of Photoshop 4 and a warez filter pack, kicking back in a comfy chair and watching the money roll in.
Self Portrait in Ball of Biro
Ok, this page is in Russian but ignore that and scroll to the bottom to see the self portrait Alexey Arkhipov made. It’s his face reflected in the ball of a ball-point pen. Extreme Macro!
